The narrative came from three separate points of view: Marla whose emotions, actions and reactions were shared directly with the reader, Gabriel whose motives and thoughts were often in direct conflict with his outward deeds and from the captor's perspective..the characters in this story, whether they a force for relative good or evil, were all interesting...the relationship between Marla and Gabriel was so complex both were conflicted and unable to control their environment whilst being constantly under a menacing scrutiny..
I have to admit that for a good three quarters of the book I was not overly convinced or enamoured with Marla's personality at times she was feisty to the point of reckless and some of her responses seemed unlikely under the circumstances in which she found herself.....it was only towards the end of the book that I finally warmed up to her...
This is a disturbing book which begged the question can any meaningful relationship grow out of darkness and destruction...it was a thrilling read which held my attention to the end..I received a copy of this book as an ARC from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review...
The characters are all 1D caricatures; we learn very little about any of them. The FMC is especially annoying; a GI Jane type. She kills 2 of the baddies but is allowed to get away with it. Really? The mmc is no Alpha; he sheds tears twice. I couldn't believe it when he did. What a wuss. Not the Alpha. I mean come on, lol.
I knew the old guy Halloran, was the mmc's dad almost as soon as they appeared together. It was obvious when the old guy didn't like 'Gabriel' calling him 'Halloran'. He wanted to be called Dad, of course!!
The story was really a non story imo, as I'm still not sure what story the author was trying to tell us. The 'business' they were involved in wasn't a real business; it was never explained what it was. Even Gabriel admitted little profit was made, so what was it all about?
There was a mystery too regarding Gabriel's mother which was never explained. She was briefly mentioned when a High school student in relation to his headmaster, grandfather, but it wasn't not elaborated upon. Therefore no idea about his mum. He tells us at the end he never knew his mum. He didn't meet his dad till an adult, so who brought him up? He seemed to be a Dr. at the beginning but I'm not even sure about that.
This sure is one strange book. There are so many better books than this in the dark Erotica genre, if you are new to it. Were I reading in this genre for the first time, this book would have put me off. I wouldn't recommend it. It was FREE to read with KU.
I loved the inconsistencies of the character of Gabriel. The way his dark side was @ war with his morality was especially well written. I feel the love between Marla & Gabriel flourished even more because they were thrown together & only had each other to draw strength from. Our heroine was KickA$$! I loved that she took all they had & gave them back more.
As far as the side characters, I would have liked to seen more interactions with the others and their "breaking", even in flashbacks. This story was really well thought out & could be taken to a series with follow on books for each of the characters. I would definitely be interested in their stories.
The reason for the deduction of stars, I found a couple things left hanging that I really wish the author would have wrapped up. Things I just wanted more finalized than me left wondering about. Could be just me being extra critical this week. This story does have a complete ending for now IMHO & does not end with a cliffhanger.
This ARC was graciously provided by the talented author to me with no requirements. I am honestly reviewing this story because I want to.
