I bought this for my son's 6th birthday. Currently he can build complex lego models by only seeing an item, like a space ship. I thought the next logical step would be an erector set. When I was a kid the erector sets were metal and razor sharp. This set contains pretty good directions for the kids to follow. For younger ones I suggest this be a adult/child project. While the kids can probably put together fairly well, some of the directions did not work out at all and some creativity was required to get them to work right.

Pros:
>> Plastic pieces with simple to use included tools teach kids how to use fasteners and components to build things
>> Objects are large enough to handle for smaller hands.

Cons:
<< Several of the directions indicate to use a red or yellow bolt when there is absolutely no way for that bolt to reach the nut on the other side. Requires modifying the build to achieve success. (Crane for example).

Overall a fine product for future engineers or mechanically inclined children.

My 5 year old son received this as a birthday present. I set about putting together the construction crane. The directions were very good, and the pieces seem pretty durable. It wasn't terribly difficult to put the crane together, which used nearly all of the pieces. There's no way my son could ever build it himself, but building isn't really his thing. Maybe a different 5 year old would be able to do it by himself, but it seems like a stretch. I'm not going to complain about how many of this piece or that piece is included. The included pieces are there to build the specific items in the instructions. You're going to be limited no matter what kind of building set you buy. What I am going to complain about, though, which takes this set from maybe a 4 star product down to a 1 star product, are the nuts and bolts. They are made of plastic, which means that any motion is going to loosen them very quickly, and there's only so much tightening you can do without stripping the bolts. Almost as soon as I made the crane, it started to come apart in a couple of places, particularly near the bottom with one of the sets of wheels. This spot held most of the weight of the crane, so any motion at all (and the crane turns and lowers, and it has wheels to roll, so there's a lot of motion) loosens the nuts. The product is disappointing to say the least. Although I didn't purchase this item for my son, I felt really bad that this "cool" toy was a piece of crap due to plastic nuts and bolts.Read more ›

Santa brought this toy for our 4 year old and he has really enjoyed it. The pieces are sturdy and easy for little hands to use as intended. He builds all sorts of creations and has just as much fun taking them apart and sorting the pieces into compartments. I do not love the locking handle on the container's lid as it is difficult to latch, even for grown-ups. I would recommend this toy for anyone who has a child interested in building and tools.

In my memories as a child I truly enjoyed building things with an old erector set at my grandparents house. I bought this for my 4 year old, whom I realize is a little young, but he loves to build and I was happy to help him. I was sure he and I would spend many hours enjoying this toy. However, I have spent a few hours now trying to follow the instructions to create a few different machines. Following the directions is not the hard part. The hard part is getting all of the pieces to stay together until you finish assembling the piece. Tonight for example I was trying to make the backhoe and after nearly 45 minutes of assembly time things started falling apart. It is as if no one ever actually assembled these machines they just designed them on paper. I can't imagine a 5 year old who would have the patience for this toy. I have assembled many things from small toys to large pieces of furniture. This toy is horribly frustrating and in the end there is nothing to show for the labor because the bolts do not stay tightened or the last few pieces don't fit together properly. Don't waste your time. I ignored the reviews and I regret it.

Ok, I grew up on Tinkertoys, and loved making gears, pulleys, differentials, etc. I was excited to add this set to our 4yo's other erector set that had a motor, and was sucked in by the three gears on the pictures. Unfortunately, this set has only two gears the same size. In addition, the gears don't even line up on the standard bar spacing. We would not recommend this kit, but have had better luck with a different Erector set.

At first look the set seems impressive. The problem however is the nut-bolts won't hold on tight. If kids start playing with the toy they just constructed, it falls apart. It is very frustrating. If you overtight the bolts using the screwdriver, it damages the threads.

Overall OK, but not at all as expected.
