I bought this set for myself as a decoration for my dorm room. It took me about an hour to assemble the airplane on front, at a leisurely pace. The most frustrating part about assembling this are my fingers are sometimes too large to hold those tiny parts, and sometimes I can't wedge my finger in the set to hold the nuts in place.

I would definitely recommend having a sibling, your child, or a friend available to help on some steps, as three hands are needed sometimes.

As far as I can tell, the specialty pieces included in this set are (2x): C369, C371, B953, C375, and (1x) B684. All the other pieces I recognize from other sets.

The instruction book can be found online here:
www (dot) meccano (dot) com/models/10-model-set.html/

Note that the instructions included with this set ONLY include the first four sets shown - the plane, a helicopter, a motorcycle, and an oil pump. The rest can be found from the website.

Overall I don't hesitate to recommend this toy, and given what I know now I would have bought it again.

First off, I am an avid Erector Set fanatic. And usually I am very happy but THIS set? Someone must have liked giving instructions that are hard to fathom (90 degree angle bracket pictures do not show proper orientation - a LOT of tightening, loosening and doing it all over again many times). And when finally constructed, per the destructions, the crappy model doesn't work. Not just the plane, but the riding helicopter, the motorcycle (which the handlebars were poorly designed) and the inanely banal "oil rig". I call it that but have no idea what it should be. For anyone buying this for your self or your kids, look at other models. Also, this set is not motorized. I was under the assumption that since I was a kid, all erector sets had little motors. I was sucker punched with this little set. Oh, and NONE of the mechanics works AT ALL. All gears are sloppy, never rotate everything, if they rotate anything at all. I jury rigged all 4 models to at least get 2 of the different gears to mesh but could not get any more. NOT a good buy at all. I could go on and on but this should scare away potential buyers from this set.

I loved Erector Sets when I was a kid, so this was a great choice for my nine year-old nephew's Christmas present. In an age where video games are all the rage, he still enjoys building things, and the Erector set offers reasonable challenges with ease of use and a great outlet for creativity as well. If you're looking for a gift that engages your child to think and also enjoy the fun of a neat toy, then this set is for you.

My little man loves to do this with his dad. We didn't realize they could only do one at a time. Son was disappointed he had to take apart his first one to make another. Wish we had purchased a much larger kit.

What can one say when one finds the right toy? I am a Grandfather (75 years)
and when I was a youngster I loved these types of toys
Now my grandson enjoys this one and some others. He has a blast with these erector sets
and hopes for more rainey days.
Good Price, great for learning.

I made my son get this fro Christmas as I wanted him to be able to sit for hours and build. He is 8 and very mechanically inclined. He breezes through the hardest Lego sets without any help.

Opening the box brought disappointment to anyone who remembers the older ones. That said we are in the age of throw away merchandise (Thanks Toyota Way) that gets the job done.

Instructions are fair. Problem is the screws and nuts are so small they are hard to handle for either of us. The kits go together but there is no way anybody who doesn't have mechanical experience is getting these models together. Then the biggest problem is the mechanical assemblies are so cheap that they do not work once assembled. Rubber collars, loose rubber bands and lite gauge metal throughout.

I guarantee anybody who has given this a high rating has not actually assembled one of the models. You have to look at the finished piece and say, how did they let something like this go into production. It seams that this is how our kids will go though life, getting products that LOOK ok but simply do not function. What happened to over engineered lower profit American made goods? Look at your childs toys and think how many won't get thrown away in a year?

I used to have erector sets when I was a kid, and I bought this one for a personal building project for a robotics class. I cannot comment on the instructions or models in the kit because I did not actually build any of them. The metal pieces are a little flimsy, and the 190 pieces is accounting all the nuts and bolts, so the number of pieces and things you can do with them is very limited.

This was bought for a mechanically-inclined, creative 13 year old. A bit beyond the suggested age range, but he enjoyed it more than I thought he would.

The problem is that once he assembled one of the options, he didn't want to disassemble it to create a different machine. So should I buy another one?

I'm choosing not to at this point, but then there is Christmas.

As for the quality, us old(er) people need to avoid comparing things to the good old days. The quality is high, though similar comments about some of the parts being too small to work with are true. That only caused him to be more creative and work with what he had. For him, it was a minor issue.

Overall, a good choice for a creative child.
