Blog postCharacter art designed by Gabriella Bujdoso On March 1st, 2022, I launched my very first Kickstarter for The Purple Door District: Urban Fantasy Series. In 4 days, I was 50% funded and received the “Project We Love” badge from Kickstarter. By day 11, I was fully funded. The project is still going, and I’ve had people ask me for advice starting their own Kickstarter. I thought I’d share a few of my tips below.

Blog postOne of the greatest feelings of being an author is finishing your book. After editing and publishing it (whether indie or traditional), we think the hard part is over. Wrong. Now it’s time to enter the realm of marketing. How do you sell yourself as an author as well as your book? How much time do you need to spend on social media or promoting your work? The very thought of it is intimidating! But if you create a routine for yourself, you can leave plenty of time for both writing and marketin1 year ago Read more

Blog postThey say that when you’ve lost someone, or you’re going through a difficult time, it’s a good idea to write down what you’re feeling. Sometimes it’s easier to articulate the emotions on a page rather than spew them out verbally. Since my mom died in March, I’ve been hit with waves of grief and anger. I can ride out some of the waves and wait for calmer waters, but others crash over me and drag me under, and it’s all I can do to keep my head above the surface. My therapist says that that’s whe2 years ago Read more

Blog postThis is the first time that I’ve written anything publicly since my mother passed away suddenly on March 8th, excluding her obituary and her eulogy. To be honest, it felt like the creativity completely went out of me, and that my relationship with writing left me along with my mother. I cried. I went to therapy. I talked to loved ones and friends about it. But it didn’t feel like I was completely letting it out. Yes, I was grieving, but I was angry too. Angry at what, I don’t really know. Blog postWolf Pit, the second book in the Purple Door District series, has officially been out for two months now. I didn’t write about the launch in December because I wanted to wait for the second Iowa City launch to happen first. I’ll say this, it was so much easier preparing for it this year than the first, if only because I had two wonderful establishments, M & M Bookstore and Sanctuary Pub, who took care of things!
The downside? I wasn’t even sure if my books would make it2 years ago Read more -
Blog postAs writers, we constantly hear how we need to have an online presence. Whether it’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Goodreads, Tumblr, etc., the more people we can connect with, the better our book sales. But exploring pages and finding a writing community can be difficult when you don’t know where to start, or you’re introverted like I am. So I’ve compiled a list of my top 10 favorite writing Facebook Groups/Pages that have helped me find a community, get published, create a marketin2 years ago Read more

Blog postI interview authors every month to learn more about them and their craft. One of the questions I always ask is, “What are common traps for aspiring writers?” The answers have been very enlightening, and I’d recommend checking them out here. But it got me thinking, what tips do I have for fellow authors? Here are a few important ones that came to mind.

Blog postTW: Mention of suicide/suicidal thoughts
It’s difficult to explain depression and anxiety to people who don’t struggle with it. A person might seem perfectly fine on the outside, but inwardly, they could be fighting a constant battle that leaves them teetering on the edge of life and death. The mind, just like the rest of the body, can get very sick and make it seem like there’s no end to the pain. No light at the end of the tunnel.

Blog postI’m sure you’ve heard the joke: be careful not to tick off a writer, she might turn you into a character and kill you. It’s pretty common for authors to create characters based on people they’ve run into in their daily lives. Maybe they borrow aspects from them (an interest, a talent, a job) and insert them into new characters in their books. But what about turning yourself into a character? Is it a good idea, or are you running the risk of making the book too personal?

Blog postLast year, I attended ICON, Iowa’s longest running sci-fi/fantasy convention. During a panel in which I shared information about myself as an author and my books, the audience and I started talking about trigger warnings and parental advisory notices on music and movies. This led us to wonder, should books also have warnings as well? Yes, we divide the books between children’s, YA, NA, Adult, Erotica, etc., but is that enough? One YA book may be tame, but another might deal with suicide, rape3 years ago Read more

Bad dreams always end the same; eventually you wake up. But Nick is trapped in a living nightmare with no end in sight.
After his pack fails to rescue him, Nick and his friends are whisked to a new fighting pit that's bigger and deadlier than the last. Werewolves and vampires aren't his only opponents; magi, werebirds, and werecats are also out for his blood. To make matters worse, he's attracted the hungry gaze of the leader of the pit, a fae named Vesp who thrives on nightmares. His only hope rests in the hands of a vampire he once called a foe and in a desperate allegiance with the parahumans who battle against him in the ring.
Back in Chicago, Tess and Arjun join forces with a sassy Huntress to discover the location of the new pit. But the longer Tess works beside Arjun, the more she's torn between her duty to the Hunters and her pack. Should she rush in to save the people she loves and risk losing them again, or stick to a plan that could just as easily fail?
In Wisconsin, Rozene and her son's pack partner with a local fae and her magus wife, owners of a magical school. They may be the only parahumans at hand capable of taking on Vesp, and with students from their school falling victim to the fae's evil plans, the fight is personal.
It's a race against time for the Purple Door District parahumans to find their friends and family before their lives are sacrificed in this game of fae.
(CW noted in the book)
Tess Montgomery isn’t your typical member of the Chicago wolf pack. In fact, she’s not a wolf at all. She’s an adopted fire magus of the pack and thus doesn’t always “play by the rules.” When her father and her best friend Nick are kidnapped in what the parahumans assume is a Hunter operation, Tess’s pack is thrown into turmoil. With Alpha Paytah unable to step outside the bounds of his new position as Violet Marshall of Chicago’s Purple Door District, Tess takes the reins to plan a rescue attempt.
Meanwhile, Nick and his fellow wolves find themselves in a world of battle and bloodshed. The Hunters have set up an illegal fighting pit where the strongest survive and the weakest are traded or killed. It’s all Nick can do to keep up the spirits of his packmates and help them escape. Or survive long enough until they’re rescued.
Unfortunately, Tess’s rescue mission fails spectacularly, leading to her capture. She finds herself the unwilling guest of a local Hunter named Arjun. Handsome, charming, and deadly, Arjun tries to convince Tess that not all Hunters are the enemy. He even offers to help her find her packmates. But is he true to his word, or does he have his own wicked plans in mind?
