Don't Buy It

Review date: 9.22.19. Purchase Date: 12.6.16. This is the reason I don't immediately review something when I buy on Amazon. Everything should work well when it's new. It's expected. This unit began to give me problems a few string changes ago. Even though it had known good batteries, I'd have to pull them out and put them back in for it to work - at least that's what I thought was wrong until the trigger literally fell off. This product has never been dropped or abused in any way, I take good care of everything I use. Now the part I really had a problem with (other than the trigger falling off). I did try to snap it back in place carefully, but to no avail. So as I wound my strings on by hand, I began to smell something hot. I picked up the unit and it was heating up. I pulled the batteries and they were REALLY hot! So glad I didn't put it back in the cupboard, who knows what could have happened? I do not recommend this product nor would I buy another one,

Useless & A Complete Waste of Time, Money & Space!

Updated review. My first version of this review mentioned that this machine eats through batteries like nobody's business when it's on its best behavior. I was willing to look the other way and try to work with it, but it is just impossible. The last two times I pulled this Power Peg out of my toolbox, the battery hatch flopped open, sending the batteries all over my floor for a fun little search that I didn't need. When I finally found them and put them in, the batteries were dead. If you try to store it in a toolbox or some kind of confined space, either it's going to turn on and burn out the batteries, or they're going to fall out or something bad is going to happen. I also want to mention that it seemed to overheat at some point and left a weird little melty mark on the plastic shell. This is not a useful, reliable tool. The Ernie Ball Power Peg is truly a little toy which is better suited for the "gadget head toy collectors" out there in Guitar Land. People who really need a useful utility implement are better off using a good old hand cranked peg winder. The Ernie Ball Power Peg will spend the rest of its life in my kitchen junk drawer, alongside the rest of the useless crap that I don't have the heart to throw away because I spent money on it. What a waste!

Man does this thing make the dreaded "string week" go by fast and painlessly.

I own a recording studio and a couple dozen guitars of all types and this thing works great on them all!

Put the old string winder in the case (for emergencies) and throw out the blue-tape (or whatever you were using to keep from scratching the head-stock).

I change strings on my acoustics and resonators about every other month and no longer dread the task, or for that matter-fear the string in the face when you're not paying attention. So far I am still on my first set of batteries after about 6 months. That's been about 18 total change outs.

Best 20 bucks you'll spend if you're a serious guitar owner. If you don't change strings all the time, this might be a bit more than you would want to spend.

Man, for a guitar player there is no activity that is more of a chore than changing strings - especially the winding of them. In just a few months I have gone from manual winding, to using a swivel winder, to this, and I couldn’t be happier. For me, the Powerpeg has already paid for itself in time savings. You have to watch out the first time you use it - the driver does not fit snugly on my tuning pegs and could slide off, with potential damage to the headstock - but just a little care and this gizmo will make string changing a pleasant task instead of drudgery. Would buy again.

i understand and don't discount the negative reviews of those that received faulty units - however - mine is fine - no battery door problems. makes restringing a guitar almost a thing to be enjoyed - rather that the cumbersome task that is downright painful if having to wind strings by hand or a manual crank. works great for me. i don't understand the differences in features and price to go from green to black - but my green powerpeg worked great and made restringing my guitars a quick easy task!

I am a classical guitarist intermediate level.I used to constantly change nylon strings, sometimes even adjust the set up action of my classical guitar by removing the saddle .Replacing the Nylon strings requires a lot of winding/unwinding, doing that by hand becomes very tedious.
I think this little excellent item should be included with any classical guitar purchase. I tried this on mine, winding/unwinding is so easy, and I cannot believe I only discovered this little product very recently.I can replace the entire 6 strings in less than 15 mins or less.

Its very easy to use this product There is a main safety On/OFF Switch.
Then we have two buttons(trigger) , the top button will unwind and make the strings loose, the bottom button winds it tight.
This has a lot of power, so make sure while winding the strings tight, to do it very slowly in small bursts as you get real close.
Since there is no variable speed, need to be careful as you near the end, with great power comes great responsibility, !!! Highly recommend this product .

I've used it once since I purchased it, put it away and it died the next time I used it. I've replaced the batteries twice to ensure I had the freshest batteries and no luck and I'm sure it wasn't dropped or banged around; it was safely secure in a drawer. First product I've purchased on Amazon that turned out to be junk and unfortunately didn't find out until way beyond the return window. Oh well, be careful with this one.

My only complaint is this winder is made out of the same cheap plastic used in Dollar Store toys, like a water gun, etc. It has no likeable tactile feel. That said, it works just fine and I've used on about 6 times so far. It's so much better than by old hand winder. It's a shame they don' make this "feel" like a proper tool by using better plastics and maybe giving it a better feel, like a shop hand drill or power screwdriver. It couldn't cost more than $1 to the overall cost and if they did, I bet you would see a lot more professional guitar techs using them - they probably use them now, but hide them so customers don't think they use toys to work on their instruments.

It didn't work straight out of the packaging.
Used new batteries and different ones, completely dead.
For the record this thing is made like some really tatty childs toy that you would get from a fairground or something, shoot a tower of cans and you can win an Ernie Ball peg winder.
It really is a cheap, poorly made piece of tat that shouldn't even be a product by a Company like Ernie Ball, or maybe that should be, like Ernie Ball used to be. Goes to show the direction of a company when they can allow this to be released.
I ended up buying a drill attachment winder for £5 and it's perfect.

While this does save time on unwinding strings, it’s not a slam dunk on winding on. If you’ve never used one of these it’s a two step process, (imho). After 50 years of the old fashioned way, it’s as I say.

The initial wind on manually is definitely still needed. I say that at least for my line 6 jtv69 which was my first attempt. If you leave it to wind on, it’s just a mess and doesn’t go on evenly and top down.

The bottom line, yes it saves some time. If I hadn’t bought it as a present for my Father’s Day, I’d probably return it.

pretty handy, works ok for electric guitar, struggles with bass strings (any load and it slows down a lot), eats batteries if you use it regularly and broke when it fell off of my lap onto the floor, not rugged at all but fine for in the house use, all plastic construction. just get a rechargeable electric screwdriver and a bit to fit a machine head

If, like me, you love the full harmonically rich 'piano-y' sound of a freshly strung low E going into a clean valve amp on the edge of breakup, you're gonna want this.
I have sweaty hands (too much coffee) so my strings get dull and lifeless quite quickly.
String changes are a necessary regular chore for me.

Did a string change no problem, straight out of the box.

Cut your string change time/effort by 2/3rds!

This might seem like a novelty but I bought one and its an absolute blessing. I use it regularly for myself and I used it when I helped my friend to restring all of his fourteen guitars collection.
Unlike some others who have put reviews about the tool on here, I have not had any issues or bad problems with it and after removing and restringing at least seventeen guitars in one day that's over Two Hundred forward/reverse operations the double AA batteries still retain high power. Its well worth having.
