Top customer reviews
Ryan cleverly ties his characters into several TOS episodes. Like a fine Clancy novel he has multiple character stories running in parallel and leaves no loose threads at the end. Yet in the finest Roddenberry tradition of TOS, the stories are not about gadgets and technology (there is no young Wesley Crusher to slap together from a communicator and spare galley tableware a tunneling neutrino scanner with reverse Heisenberg modulators to reveal the Klingon infiltrators) but the personal conflicts and tragedies the characters must resolve.
Ryan also gives the reader an excellent view of the Klingon mindset through the various Klingon characters. You may finish the books thinking like a Klingon! He also gives the same treatment to Spock, tracing through his logical thought processes and actions designed to elicit the desired responses to Enterprise crew members in times of crises. Yet unlike so many other TOS authors, Ryan avoids the nauseating pitfall of the Wishy-Washy Uncertain Emotional Spock struggling to come to grips with Logical Spock. In fact, Ryan avoids the entire morass of PC thought that all too many TOS authors try to imprint upon the Trek universe.
Is there anything not to like? Only that Kevin Ryan doesn't produce more TOS novels. Just as my Tom Clancy novels, these will stay in the my library for many future re-readings.
