I have never used an alcohol stove before and frankly did not really know what to expect in this one. This product has vastly exceeded my expectations. The flame produced by burning denatured alcohol is very large and hot due to the great design of the burner. Filling the burner reservoir just 1/4 full will fuel the flame for around 15 minutes. Pair this with a Triangia fuel bottle filled with denaturated alcohol(available in any store with a paint section) and you have a great little portable stove that will get you through a week of backpacking. I have also found that an egg pan fits perfectly atop the burner. In addition, I am going to purchase a small grill grate so that I can use my stovetop espresso maker with this unit. The included cookset is truly of great quality so with the addition of these few small add ons, I have everything I need to cook on a backpacking trip. You could easily cook for 2 with this set if you had to, but id recommend one for every member of your particular voyage.
I have ran a couple of tests and have found that this kit will BOIL....
:::1 cup of water in about just under 6 minutes with the TOP OFF
:::2 cups of water in just under 10 minutes with the TOP ON.
The water I boiled was straight from the tap cold. sea level. ~70 ambient temperature.
The fit and finish is not perfect, but good enough to warrant 4 stars from me. There were no flaws in the materials, and only minor imperfections in the manufacturing, none of which had any effect on the functionality. Everything works as it should and fits together just fine. I currently own 7 different types of stoves (3 of which are Esbit brand) and have found strengths and weaknesses in all of them. There is absolutely no reason that this cookset shouldn't be able to provide years of service unless you are the type that completely abuses your equipment.
The alcohol burner will hold approximately 4 ounces of alcohol, however the manufacturer recommends filling it no more than 2/3 full (70ml / 2.4 oz). You should be able to bring 16 ounces of 78 degree farenheit water to a rolling boil in approximately 10.5 minutes at sea level using just under 1 ounce of denatured alcohol (in perfect indoor conditions). Maximum efficiency in the outdoors will require the use of some type of windscreen. Total burn time per Esbit is 30 minutes with 70ml of alcohol. The smaller lid / pot is capable of holding 16 ounces of water, and the larger pot will hold approximately 32 ounces. The longer handle on the flame snuffer / flame control lid makes it handy to install without burning your fingers, but forget about adjusting it after you place it on the burner. This may be hard to visualize, but the hinge point in my unit is too tight to adjust the flame while the lid is on the burner. The whole piece moves around the burner instead of the adjustment cover. You must make your adjustment prior to placing it on the stove.
This set is perfect for boiling water for freeze dried foods and coffee. Cooking on it, although not impossible, would be easier to accomplish using the alcohol burner instead of a solid fuel tablet due to the longer burn times and heat control. The extent of my actual "cooking" in this set consists of boiling ramen noodles along with bits of precooked protein.
If you are an ultralight "weight weenie" backpacker, you will probably find that this set is a bit too heavy and large at 417 grams (not including fuel weight). It's certainly larger and heavier than the available titanium sets on the market, and much larger than other solid fuel stoves available from Esbit. For example, their titanium folding stove weighs in at a mere 11 grams (not including cookware and fuel weight). The average hiker, however, should have no problems fitting this set in their pack and will enjoy the versatility of the dual fuel option.
