These three books – ESCAPING THE DEAD, TALES OF THE FORGOTTEN, and ONLY THE DEAD LIVE FOREVER – were written in 2014, but the impact of these dystopian stories take on an even stronger resonance during these strange times. Reference a portion of Book 2 - ‘The world is at war with the Primal Virus. Military forces across the globe have been recalled to defend the homelands as the virus spreads and decimates populations.’ Ideas such as this alert us to the possibility the Lundy is prescient! The author has stated, ‘I developed the Whiskey Tango Foxtrot series form notes and ideas I had put together while deployed to Afghanistan. I had been jokingly asked how we would defend against a zombie attack. I wanted to tell a story the portrays the military that I know, that displays our actual capabilities.’
Charging a dystopian sci-fi subject with wholly credible characters that make the presence of zombies near credible is a trait that pervades this exciting series. Lundy serves up his ideas well, and reading one novel in this series likely assures the reader to continue the fantasy journey. And now that is possible vis-à-vis this bundle.
Quality writing, vivid attention to detail, and fast paced, this is an excellent series that speaks to the art of WJ Lundy and is bound to attract an even a larger audience to his work. Recommended. Grady Harp, December 20
Well, lets be honest: the action and zombie-splattering not only leaves the character development in the dust, it laps it seventeen times and gives it a neck-punch on each one. You could call the guys Badass 1 through Badass 10 and it literally wouldn't matter. Badass 1 shoots a zombie in the head. Badass 2 shoots a zombie in the head. Badass 3 runs over a zombie because he happens to be driving. Badass 4 throws a grenade. Badass 5 shoots a zombie in the head. Badass 6 clears a doorway with Badass 7. Badass 8 shoots a zombie in the head. Badass 9 shoots a zombie in the head. Badass 10 decapitates a zombie with an axe because he has to be different.
Because who needs angst and characterization? Sometimes you just want to read about zombies getting splattered, and the W.T.F. series is excellent at delivering it.
EDIT: OH! One last thing. I found the authors stories to be worth the purchase of books #4 and #5...which in my mind is the highest form of a compliment one can pay any author.
From the first page Lundy starts reeling you in with just the right amount of detail and suspense. You feel the anxiety of the characters and you find yourself feeling suspicious of each new situation and character. You are often wondering if you will lose a favorite character or will he/she squeak through another harrowing situation. Warning - nothing is predictable in these page turners by Lundy...you just gotta hang on and ride it out to the end!
