Well I grew up with the movies, and as an adult I rewatched them. They're great, even now. Love those kids.
Who would have known there was a book ? Well, maybe someone less lazy than me who took the time to find it. Apparently it has been around for a long time and pleased many.
I couldn't be happier. It was an easy read but captivating the entire time. The movie deviates somewhat from the book but the overall themes and ideas are all the same. So even though in the movie the guy who helps them is a crusty old loner in a Winnebago and the book has him as a priest, he is essentially the same trustworthy and helpful person.
Of course the themes that we all love are there too - the close relationship between Tony and Tia, the psycho kinetic abilities, the sense of being an outsider who wants to find your place in the world. Beautiful and timeless themes.
I highly recommend the book. I was very happy to be able to read it. Only saw one typo in the Kindle version, so that's pretty good.

It took me 44 years to actually read the book that spawned one of my most favorite films ever. This book was born the same year as I was and that makes it seem even more dear to me. There are differences in the stories, times and places but the majority is close enough. If you, like me, loved that Disney classic, and still do, you will find nothing but pure joy in this book and the author, and will want to explore his other works with a curiosity and wonder at the hopes of he world's Alexander Key will give you. If you are younger and grew up with the 90's version, there is little of that story here in the book, but if you saw the most recent (to date) version Race to Witch Mountain, there are similar themes and the sense of non-stop action from this book, and you will enjoy it as a companion piece.

This is a classic YA adventure. Tony and Tia are a mysterious pair of twins with strange powers that they don't understand. When their foster grandmother dies, they are placed in a grim inner-city orphanage. Their troubles multiply as they are pursued by a sinister figure who claims to be their uncle, but is clearly not. Tony and Tia's flight to escape and to find their real family is an exciting chase and also a journey of discovery. Alexander Key creates a threatening world filled with prejudice and suspicion, which makes the rare help they get from strangers more moving. It's a fun, exciting, mysterious, and ultimately satisfying novel. It was written during the Cold War and that gives it a somewhat dated feeling, but it's still a good read.

I was probably ten years old when I first read this book and my memories are blurred. Rereading it has been great fun. Tony and Tia are orphans with secret powers. Shady forces want to harness their abilities and the chase begins. Alexander Key was a great writer and he knew how to draw readers in while not giving away too much. His books often had ambiguous, yet satisfying endings. I recommend this book to anyone who loves adventure. It should be mentioned that the great 70s movie version didn't follow the book closely. I recommend both.

I read this story over and over again when I was much younger, and I was concerned about what I would think reading it again as an adult. It turns out I needn't have worried. The book was every bit as enjoyable as I remembered it to be, and I discovered that it was filled with a dark tone and complex themes that make it appropriate for an older audience than is usually recommended. Definitely worth another read.

As a kid I was a big fan of the two original Witch Mountain movies, so I was very interested to read the original novel. I'm not so crazy about the modern remake of "Escape", and I think that fans of that movie may find that it strays quite a bit from the original source material. Still, it should be enjoyable for them to see where it all came from.

I understand one's reluctance to pick up paperbacks that look like novelizations of so-so Disney movies. (Can you say "The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes" or "The Shaggy D.A."?) Well, this was written first, it is not Disneyfied, and it is a lot better than you might expect. It is certainly dated, but not to the extent that it is hard to follow or filled with careless inappropriate characterizations. The characters are well conceived and their circumstances are revealed slowly and with a satisfying sense of mystery. The escapes and chases are taut and plausible. As a consequence this book really does work as an adventure/mystery, without any of the magic angles that inform so much current youth fiction. So, this certainly qualifies as an overlooked semi-classic, and as such is well recommended

I watched the 1975 Disney movie do I wanted to read the book much better than the movie. I could see the inspiration. I quite liked it!

Enjoyable Read- Slighty darker than Disney

I'm writing this review because Escape is a good read and no one else had reviewed it. I saw the Disney film ages ago and became curious about the book it was based on. It's a good piece of adventurous sci-fi. It's slightly grittier than a lot of kids books without being unsuitable. It's different from today's science fiction in that it suggests that God created the aliens and their worlds as well as our own. Some readers might be put off because it's slightly dated as one of the character’s goes on a brief rant about Communists.
