Escaping Scientology: An Insider's True Story: My Journey With the Cult of Celebrity Spirituality, Greed and Power Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 297 ratings

Artists Peter and Karen Schless were seduced by Scientology's celebrity spirituality, and detoured from Hollywood careers to join its extremist group, the Sea Org. In leader David Miscavige's inner sanctum, they built their mental prison as they melded into its radicalized lifestyle where danger, captivity and abuse were normalized. After three escapes, Karen chose between two unbearable options.

Escaping Scientology Part I sweeps you into the lives of two young adults filled with hope and love as designer Karen and her award-winning musician-composer husband Peter overcome obstacles to succeed in the music and fashion industries together. Scientology re-focuses their goals toward the importance of clearing the planet and recruiting celebrities to build Scientology's social capital. Karen portrays the basic beliefs of Scientology that led to her radicalization into the Sea Org at the Celebrity Centre, a fortress where artists aspire to achieve greatness while attaining spiritual freedom through L. Ron Hubbard’s teachings. Karen shows how celebrities are lured into Scientology and develop a co-dependent relationship from which few break out.

Part II reveals Karen as a flawed and complex woman when she and Peter move to the secretive International Management headquarters, where they join 800 fanatical Sea Org members that made billion-year commitments to make this a Scientology world without war, criminality, or insanity. Karen finds the dystopian outpost and its global operations to be proof that Time magazine’s 1991 article, “The Thriving Cult of Greed and Power” captures the essence of Scientology’s mindset, that she describes as “war is everything and everything is war.” She is no passive victim as she attempts to stay in the driver’s seat and keep their marriage intact while fighting the pressures of the Int base culture that attempt to break them apart. Scientology goes under “Cruise Control” as Miscavige becomes obsessed with his biggest trophy, Tom Cruise, and stiffens his control and abusive punishment methods on the Int base staff. Karen rebels against regulations and spends time in Scientology’s prison camp. After two attempts to escape the Int base, she is trailed by security guards and coerced into returning. Failing to escape, she questions the evidence of her own senses, and makes a mind-twisting re-commitment to become the best version of a Sea Org member she can be. Karen carves out a world she can live within as she is promoted into the highest echelons of management, appointed by the Chairman of the Board RTC to Int Management Public Relations Officer and later to take charge of the image of Sea Org staff internationally from the Int Finance Office. While working on special projects under David and Shelley Miscavige, she travels to Scientology bases around the world where she sees human rights violations set in place by Hubbard’s policies that cause her to conclude Scientology is a for-profit business that builds billions of dollars of assets on the backs of Sea Org slave labor, while hiding behind the banner of the First Amendment, claiming benefits and protection as a non-profit religion.

The epilogue of Part III portrays the mind-wrenching process of physical escape, and psychological anguish as Karen plies herself out of Scientology’s grip and endures its cruel disconnection policy. She re-acclimates herself to life on the outside while, brick by brick, she disassembles the walls of the mental prison she had built, and survives with the help of her accomplice and the love and support of her family.

Karen's narrative memoir shows that Scientology's plan, authored by L. Ron Hubbard and David Miscavige, is filled with flaws: While the leaders impose their will on members who follow blindly and spend exorbitant amounts of money or dedicate their lives to achieve spiritual freedom, they grossly underestimate the power of individual free will in those brave enough to escape and speak out.

This book is extremely well written. Karen is obviously an intelligent woman who's quite literally made her life an "open book".
I didn't want the book to end, always curious when she'd find her breaking point with the mind-altering cult she'd become imprisoned by.
Karen Schless Pressley is gifted, intelligent, and a great example that anyone is at risk when it comes to being lured in by the dangerous "religion" of Scientology.
I've read many books written by former members, journalists, and writers covering the topic of Scientology. This book is definitely one of the best first-person accounts.
The only thing outweighed by Ms. Pressley's talent is the bravery she has for telling her story.

Schless Pressley provides account of a tale of criminal injustice in our modern times. That people fall for this kind of mind control is appalling, yet a tremendous curiosity. Her detailed recollection shows that each and every experience she survived is indelibly imprinted in her mind. My only criticism is a need for greater editing of the book. At times, I struggled to make sense of some of the sentences due to this. Otherwise, a great read!

Escaping Scientology by Karen Schless Pressley, tells another personal story, about Scientology and its powerful hold over those who get involved and the destructive actions Scientology takes to tear apart families, silence critics and hide what they are actually doing.
I knew Karen and her husband Peter Schless, while I was in Scientology and working at the secret Gold/International Base in Gilman Hot Springs, California. Her story has many similarities with my own. We both escaped on more than one occasion and we both returned because we did not want to leave our spouses behind. But eventually we came to the realization that our spouses were completely trapped and would never leave with us, so have to make the choice for our own sanity, to leave by ourselves. (The odd coincidence, is that years later, her former husband Peter and my former wife Julie got married to each other and are still trapped in Scientology.)
I enjoyed learning Karen’s story of how her and Peter met each other in Houston, Texas and eventually ended up in Los Angeles and started successful music and design careers before getting involved with Scientology. I also was interested in her stories about David Miscavige and his abuses against the hard working staff of Scientology after I left in 1990. It confirmed to me, what I had always feared, that things were going to get much worse, which they in fact did.
Scientology creates a powerful hold over people and their minds, whereby intelligent people are willing to give up their ability to reason and evaluate information and make their own decisions and instead accept without question, the words and beliefs of one man – L. Ron Hubbard to the exclusion of all else.
Karen escaped and rebuilt her life after leaving, graduating from college with both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees and reconnecting with her family and finding love and happiness outside of Scientology. She has been willing to confront Scientology, share her experiences to warn others and endured the inevitable overt and covert attacks by Scientology to try and destroy her reputation.

This is her story and it is well worth reading.

I absolutely loved this book, it was fascinating to me to read and find out what happened after I left the sea org in 1982, especially at the Int base (how crazy it became) and it was heartbreaking to read about my sister Geray (Jory) Maio and how she was so badly denigrated publicly by DM, it made my stomach sick and she is still there. Also the way scientology gets celebrities into its organization was very interesting. If you follow the goings on of scientology this is an excellent book to read. Karen is a great writer.

I found this book to be a tedious read. Tons of grammatical errors, and loads of Scientology acronyms. There's a lot of unnecessary repetition and WAY too much meandering. The author could have whittled it down to 250 pages, rather than its mind-numbing 377 pages, and it would have been tolerable. The story itself is compelling enough, and a damning indictment of Scientology, but just don't make the mistake of laying down to read it.

This book is the real deal. Ms. Pressley has experienced this first-hand. I know it took her a long time to write this book and it was worth the wait! Interesting celebrity stories and explanation about why they are essential to the cult of Scientology. This organization should be closed down and stripped of its tax-free status. Thank you for adding your voice to this conversation that needs to continue. Oh- in the spirit of disclosure, I was in graduate writing school with Karen, I was in creative nonfiction class with her. Her writing is excellent.

Thankyou for this wonderful book...full of heartache, indecision, and a betrayal of belief. The film of the song, "we stand tall", (did McSavage come up with that title?), was funny, but knowing COB was standing on an apple box, makes it hilarious, as he's still shorter than everyone else. Wishing Ms Pressley much luck and love in all the years to come.

This is a heartfelt, gripping story of the mighty human spirit of a beautiful soul. How she overcame oppression and brainwashing that was deeply indoctrinated. It is a message of hope, freedom and success despite all that she and others endured.
