The alerts on this detector a much more pleasant than most, with softer tones and voice alerts about what's going on. It would be completely possible to run this unit headless without the display or app.
The app integration is pretty interesting, and allows quick setup of the detector. It also seems to do a good job of triangulating the position of threats it puts on the map. The down side of this though, is you have to pay to get access to other people's reports.
Biggest complaint is the lack of a "city" mode. I get a LOT of X and K band false alerts, and with the app integration it would be quite easy for Escort to build a database of "lockouts" at the specific frequencies that are causing them. This unit has a much more advanced receiver than most people realize, and is able to resolve multiple signals simultaneously on each band and provide accurate frequency on each target. If the users constantly locked out a particular frequency at a particular location, why not share that with everyone using the app?
The mounting hardware that came with the unit its pretty good. I ended up using the adhesive mount for the detector so I could position it behind the mirror and right below the windshield tint line. This proved to be super split, but I'm not sure how I'll remove it in the future. Used the suction cup mount to hold the display until I can relocate the display down to the gauge cluster.
On the display, it's cord is WAY too short for any sort of advanced install. You'll need a rj9 cable and coupler to extend this to other locations like the guage cluster.
Note that this unit does not use the standard BelCort mount they'd been using for years. It's actually the newer Escort MAX style mount, so if you don't what to use the included hardware you need to look for that style.
With that said the Smart Radar is the first M4 I have which performs better than every other of its antenna sharing brothers. It is in between the a Redline(M3) bunch and it's M4 family members. Now for the money being that the Smart Radar is discontinued but still supported by Escort it is the best steal you can get as of now. If you On my top tier unit and want a back up, want something that is stealth and not easily noticed (do not ,mistake this for RDD stealth) in illegal areas this unit can be tracked by police specter RDD's. Unlike the M3 units which cannot be detected by police. I mean stealth install. While not remote like a Stir or 9500ci this unit goes behind the rear view and shares the fancy 9500ci mini display which you can mount on the rear view and it looks like a compass barely noticeable. Or you can lengthen it with proper knowledge of electronics or buy it's long corded version from escort and put the mini display wherever you please.
It is very similar function wise to the a Redline in that it has auto brightness, offered Auto, Auto NoX, and Highway modes like its M3 big brother. It speaks out the functions you change ,like the redline as well. I So far have had saves I can only describe as in between the M3 units I own and my other M4s. When the new passport is here I will be excited to see if it outshines or is able to equal the smart radar. New this unit was 449. Add to that you get a year free of live which is worth 149 dollars after the cost of $100 for a live cord and 49 for s year subscription. However, if purchasing a new unit from escort adding a live cord and free year I believe is about 40 or so extra dollars. But that is if you are buying a brand new unit from them. Many V1 lovers who are anti escort will over exaggerate the cost of live premium. V1 and escort customers are much like Ford vs Chevy or BMW vs Mercedes rivals. Unable to appreciate their rivals greatness or respect it's followers. I am not one of those people. I want to know, what I pay good money for performs and does its job to the best of its abilities. If I am buying a RD I want the best range and performance or it is of no use to me and I am better off saving that money a ticket which is how I feel about cobra and Rocky Mountain detectors as well as some other junk units I wouldn't even pay a penny for. Whistler is the only brand making units more aimed at the budget minded customer who doesn't demand the best. They are not on the same level as an escort, bel, or V1 but should not be grouped with junk like cobra and others. Just because apple and android have a cobra iradar similar to the idea the smart radar don't let that fool you into thinking it can save you from a ticket. You'll be pulled over with the ticket in your hand before a cobra will alert to a cop. If it even does.
The V1 reigned supreme on its own level since the 80s until Escort/beltronics (same company oddly making units still under different names) made the first unit capable of being stealth against radar detector detectors cops use to bust truckers, users in radar det illegal states like VA DC and Canada, and then set the record of producing one that also set the 12 mile alert record at the time in a radar detector shootout beating the V1 and dethroning it with the STI driver. The STI driver now the sti magnum is bel's Redline clone without the redlines Band segmenting and RDR on/off only offered on the remote installed high high end bel and escort units. Adding this makes the Redline the most raw performing windshield mounted unit ever and only unit to spank the STI and been the remote M3 1500 plus dollar units. The redline is freakish and defies laws of physics in its ability to pick up radar around corners and hills or whatever LEO try to use to hide from it. It will sniff them out. While the V1 does not by any means get beat to the pavement in shootouts it has been dethroned without a doubt. Yes it has some things loyal owners argue still make it the GOAT; it is no longer that. It is undoubtedly one of the top 4 windshield mount units still which is impressive since it hasn't been changed much other than firmware since the late 80's. I respect it and won't bash it but if I am going to spend 400 or more I warn the best and the redline or sti magnum holds that title with their escort live network added to that and free firmware updates I see no reason to own a V1 anymore. It is a noisy unit that will cause many to ignore the alerts and get a ticket ironically.
With that all being said the Smart Radar is specific to android or ios. You must buy the unit that matches your operating platform. When it was new it was 449$ and it was kicking #%$ and taking names being held Back by the marketing and lack of dual platform capability. iOS to android and you no longer could use your smart radar with live and vice versa. There are ways around this like an iPod touch with wifi in the car or LTE droid device on the other hand were you to find yourself changing OS on your phone with your smart radar capable of only it's specific make. One thing is it performs incredible as a stand a lone radar det. It also is now a steal due to the discontinuing of it. Be sure you are buying the right os version and that it's an escort authorized seller so it is supported. Groupon has them here and there for 200 new and confirmed backed by escort as well as some other sites. Amazon being one of them as long as it is not damaged or from a seller on here escort has on their unauthorized list.
If you want $449 worth of performance from the best RD producer in the industry for 200 or less this is your chance. If you want the hottest M4 unit made that only it's higher end M3 brethren can outperform this is it. I have every M4 and am not a Max which runs a M5 antenna fan which is preference. As of now this is the best value you will find thanks to it's discontinued status by escort.
You can spend what you would on a whistler or lesser quality unit and get the performance of a hot escort radar detector. If you want something you don't have to take down every time you park and is out of sight and out of mind but aren't looking to do a 1500-2000 dollar remote unit this is for you. I took the time to put a thourough review of this awesome product because it is a steal and may not be available soon due to lack of further production, and I did not read one review that is written by what I consider to be a true and knowledgable rd enthusiast like myself. Most will not know where to look for good reviews of this product and will not have the correct information about it so I hope to clear that up for those who are unsure of whether they want one or not and are sitting there with the mouse near the purchase button, but can't decide what to do.
Make sure you are getting an authorized seller unit, correct platform for your phone os, the mounts are included and unused as they are needed for it to be used correct, and be sure you ask the seller about the details I've discussed and are clear on their return policy in case of a mistake or miscommunication. Drive smart and drive safe. If you want the best you get what you pay for. Although this is not the best of the best consider it like this. You're buying a Ferrari in an Escort, and at a bargain price which we all know doesn't happen often if ever. in this unit. While you are not buying the baddest best model it is a Ferrari and certainly a high performance product. If you want the best and have the dough the redline is your choice to go with then. But if you simply want an awesome performing model at a steal of a price then this is it.
This does not require escort live in order to work. It functions fine as a stand alone detector. But to get the most out of it be sure you're able to run live premium if you own a droid or iphone and get the right model and be sure it has a warranty. Some sellers are not honest.
