Nathan and his crew encounter a couple of new creatures in this round of adventures. One is an Esper assassin in the employ of Hades known as Red Cap. He apparently can’t be killed. The other is not an Esper, just a very talented individual who calls himself the Phantom Thief. He goes up against Red Cap and numerous other people trying to kill him and miraculously manages not to die. He also manages to outwit Nathan and James. But eventually, he comes around to helping the Institute Espers because he regards Hades’ crew as his enemies.
The action in this book, just like in the first one, is pretty much non-stop, with a super-hero comic book feel. It’s not really believable, but then I guess it’s not meant to be. The puppet villains are destroyed in the midst of chaos, but the sponsor villains live to create mayhem another day.
I had read the first book previously, and that probably makes it easier to read this one, but it's not absolutely necessary. You can even read the first book after the second if you wish.
So, what kind of book is this? Well, some great books will leave you stunned for days, others will even make you immediately start over after you finished it. This is not that kind of book. Instead, it's simply an enjoyable ride with, as other reviewers have described it, constant action. It's a 'steampunk' universe, and I (as an EE) have to suspend my disbelief quite a bit whenever electromagnetic fields are mentioned.. but that's all part of the fun. It's a quick read, but because of all the action I imagine that this book (and the first one) are books that can be read again and again after enough time has passed to let you forget exactly what happened. In this sense the books are similar to Discworld books (in that they can be read again, not otherwise. I think. Or..).
I'm not going to describe the plot or the characters, I happen to dislike reviews which read like a short version of the novel (I dislike film trailers too). I don't like spoilers of any kind. So if you want that, look at other reviews, or read the book description.
In any case, I will re-read the book at a later time, and I'm already looking forward to it.
This tale keeps you hooked from the start.
A steam punk story filled with action sequences just like the first installment, but with new interesting characters joining both sides: heroes and foes.
The Institute is celebrating Esper Day with big floats and power demonstrations as a way to show society that they are not a threat. Meanwhile, there are other plans in place to kill any one with powers, with the development of weapons that can harm or incapacitate espers. And since two sides aren't enough, the Sky Cult plans to rule every esper in town. Its leader, who has god like powers thinks he is above and beyond human kind.
Can't wait for the next.
