Editorial Reviews

Espirito is a melding of world, jazz, chill and latin music and reunites Lawson Rollins with acclaimed musician and producer Shahin Shahida (of Shahin & Sepehr) and multi-platinum producer Dominic Camardella (Ottmar Liebert). All songs are composed and performed by Lawson with contributions from a global cast of musical legends. Featured artists include iconic Brazilian jazz singer Flora Purim, renowned percussionist Airto Moreira, Grammy award winner Charlie Bisharat on violin, Iranian ''kamancheh'' master Kayhan Kalhor and Cuban born drummer Horacio ''El Negro'' Hernandez. Lawson recorded the album at such world class studios as Sound Design in Santa Barbara, CA., George Lucas' Skywalker Sound & Hyde St. studios in the Bay Area.

Sharpen your global IQ with ESPIRITO, the second solo masterpiece from guitar virtuoso Lawson Rollins. Expounding on the vision from his INFINITA debut, Rollins teams up once again with Shahin Shahida and Dominic Camardella as co-producers. ESPIRITO is an adventurous amalgam of musical cultures. The strength of this project is rooted in its ability to engage the listener by skipping across borders and continents like stepping-stones. Having been blown away by its initial spin, it was on subsequent visits where I found the vibrant playfulness of Lawson's musical mastery truly revealed... "Moonlight Samba," the first Smooth radio single, features vocal ad-libs from Brazil's Flora Purim. Love the western twist of "Blue Mountain Bolero"... and "Footprints" is a dreamy number that leaves you quiet and centered. With today's skyrocketing airfares and fees and now even more security, leave the tarmac behind and take a journey with ESPIRITO. The world is yours... no passport required - just your music player! ~BROOKS WALKER

After hearing a cut from Rollins' new CD, "Full Circle," on Echoes (a world music program on PRI), I went to his webpage and listened to cuts from "Full Circle" and "Espirito." Immediately the next day, I ordered both CDs and have been playing them ever since in my vehicle. Love both CDs and my friends do too. Will order Rollins' other two CDs in the next week.

It was only two years ago when Lawson Rollins sprung his impressive and critically praised debut Infinita on the general listening public. This must have put some pressure on what to do next, but Espirito shows no signs of the dreaded sophomore slump by avoiding the attempt to fix what is not broken. Though with a little further musical exploration, Lawson keeps the musical quality fresh.

Espirito maintains the production team of Shahin Shahida and Dominic Camardell with Rollins assisting. That said, all thirteen compositions are self-penned. Once again, Lawson is musically all over the map, migrating and integrating flamenco, Bossa Nova, samba, salsa, and jazz genres creating his own intoxicating musical voice. This is best encapsulated by the buoyant and optimistic title track that represents the merger of all the above genres. The jazzy saxophones and clarinets of Richard Hardy and Justin Claveria, along with the vocal chants of Flora Purim and Diana Booker are in complete synchronicity with the soul and sway of Rollins guitar work.

One of the albums finest moments comes courtesy of the highly melodic "Santa Lucia Waltz" that also features the violin and cello work of Charlie Bisharat and Cameron Stone respectively. If this more reserved approach is appreciated then the solitary stripped down "Footprints" will leave you thirsty for more of Lawson's introspective expressions. This is a perfect opportunity for you as a listener to catch your breath before you take on his tour de force courtesy of "The Caravan Trilogy". Clocking in at over seventeen minutes, the three movements of "Migration", "Shadowland" and "Into The Light" have global implications that represent the entire essence of Rollins musical world.

Lawson Rollins is truly a gifted guitar player. This album really lets him express his talents. All the tracs were thoughtful and well done. Great vocals besides.

You know this music. Purely instumental, with the flamenco style pushed around with fabulous playing and layers upon layers of facinating craftmanship.
It seems it would be difficult to specifically tell you in words the difference between great and exceptional in this genre of music. There is perfection and then it goes a bit further. Something grabs you, and the CD goes around and around... the time spins away and you go back to it. Great summer pool / dinner party music.

Having enjoyed Rollins' last album "Infinita" immensely, I immediately purchased "Espirito" when it came out. Rollins has managed to exceed "Infinita" with this new release, which is hard to believe. Each tune is a stunning display of compositional grace and supreme musical mastery on the part of both Rollins and all the many other musicians showcased so generously throughout the album. The abundantly diverse instrumentation gives this album a variety of sound that sets it apart. Greater and greater pleasures and subtleties emerge on repeated listenings, which is always the hallmark of a classic album.

This album is truly epic in scope and majestic in its use of musicians and singers from around the world. The guitar work of Lawson Rollins keeps it all cohesively grounded in his signature style, known to millions around the world. Highly recommended for any fan of the guitar, Latin jazz, World music, or anyone who appreciates music of the highest quality. Each track offers a rich palette of sound, but the sum total of all 13 songs is truly an overwhelming experience. 5 stars!

Full disclosure: I am a friend of the artist. But I am also a fan. In this CD he takes the world influences to a new level and creates a sophisticated setting for his accomplished guitar falsettas. Although he excels at speed and precision, I am particularly partial to the moodier and more haunting tracks such as Shadowland.
