You don't "get a lot for your money" because you can get a giant bag for cheaper from other brands. And while the word "ORGANIC" is slapped on hugely, perlite is not a naturally-occurring substrate so it might not be to everyone's tastes.

That said, this perlite is the epitome of flawless perlite. They are perfect-sized and the pores aren't too big that it looks too much like styrofoam. Perlite does wonders in my pots by making the soil less compact and increasing drain-ability. I wouldn't pot any succulents without.

Just remember to not breathe any of it (not just this brand, but any brand). Perlite is volcanic glass that has been expanded by heat to make it porous. It can be very dangerous if it gets into your lungs. I've gotten bad headaches from perlite, but I read that it can also make you cough up blood. When handling it, I wear a cloth over my face now to be safe. As an inert substrate, it's safe in your soil and won't get sucked up into your plant. Just remember to wash edibles well!

I needed perlite for my Venus flytraps that didn't contain anything else at all, like the fertilizers that Miracle Gro always adds to everything they make, because flytraps need very poor "dead" soil without any nutrients. This works great and is very hard to find where I live. Only one nursery near me has ever carried it and I had to special order it from them this year, so I was very glad to find it online too.

I grow Shiitaki mushrooms and this stuff is great for the budding chambers. It is nice to find an Organic option without a bunch of chemicals that kill my shrooms.

Just received this product on 10/22/2013. The size of the perlite varies a bit, but there are plenty of larger pellets. Of course, I haven't reached the bottom of the bag yet. What impressed me about the package is the zip/slide opening. Just pull the tab like on a Ziploc slider bag, to open and close. So, you can open the bag as little or as wide as you wish. Pretty pleased with that as I don't expect perlite everywhere upon opening. The bag came packed well with large bubble wrap and protected by paper so the bag was well surrounded and probably suffered little abuse during handling, thus reducing the size of the perlite pellets. Just what I was looking for to transplant some outside plants indoors as well as some propagating.

What can I say? It's organic, it's amorphous volcanic glass. It's exactly as described. Great price - much better than any local options.

previously, I had grown indoor plants and they would always remain too soggy and eventually develop a mold. This helped to create drainage and loosen the soil.

What perlite does is stated right on the front of the bag: for "improving heavy soils."

Let's say you have regular potting soil, but need cactus soil. You don't need to buy separate cactus soil because you can add some perlite to the mix in a 50/50 ratio, and it's now cactus soil. That's what improving heavy soils means, lightening and airing it up so water can flow through easily. The ratio of how you mix it depends on the needs of your plants. Do your research and give your plants the proper growing environment.

Perlite is a white, lightweight, and typically formed by the hydration of obsidian (Dragonglass. Game of Thrones reference). Be careful when digging it out of the bag as it can easily blow around and out of the bag. You also want to be careful in not breathing in any crushed dust particles.

This is a great product to improve existing potting soil you may have, or to create your own custom mix. Recommended.

I work a lot with succulents and cactus plants. I tend to make lots of cuttings from stem and leaf cuttings. It'is important that they have a good environment to root in. I use the Perlite along with cactus soil and sand for the cactus cuttings and I use the Perlite with cactus soil and peat moss for for the succulents. I also will combine the Perlite with vermiculite for seed starting for my garden. It helps to have good drainage for the plants, cuttings and seeds, especially cacti and succulents. It's good stuff and my plants do very well.
