I don't want to give spoilers, but the main character gets "partially" reaped by accident and is sent to Hell. The whole series is built around her efforts to get back to Earth, to bring justice to her boss, and get back her old life. As she goes along, she realizes she's better off where she is now, and can build a new life for herself.
There's a little light romance, but it's not too graphic, which was nice to see.
Overall I really liked this book and the entire series.
Like I said in an earlier review, my wife and I have very divergent tastes in fiction. Yet we both laughed out loud while reading this series. Usually, I hate her books and she despises mine. It is nice to have common ground in fiction.
I recommend the entire series, But I really think you need to read the first two books before reading ” Esprit de Corpse “
I will read some more of MS grant’s works.
My first thought after finishing ESPRIT DE CORPSE, the third book in The Reluctant Reaper series, was that I wish Kristy had just stayed in hell. After the dramatic cliffhanger at the end of SCYTHE DOES MATTER (so far my favorite), we find Kristy and Dante up on "the mortal coil" trying to save Kristy's best friend Shannon, from her evil father, the same guy who was responsible for Kristy being in hell in the first place.
ESPRIT DE CORPSE was a bit of a disappointment after SCYTHE DOES MATTER. I guess it is hard to improve on a hell based school for grim reapers, in my mind, but going to Earth to save a character who has even less personality than Kristy displayed in the first book definitely was a step backward. Shannon was so bland that I even forgot her name only a few days after I finished the book. Plus, Dante and Kristy's relationship was on the rocks, so there wasn't even that to look forward to.
Luckily, we still have the same sense of humor, and of all the books, I really think Kristy comes into her own in this one. She manages to take charge and make decisions for herself. And ESPRIT DE CORPSE does tie up any loose ends from the other installments. Unfortunately, I wish there had been more Dante and Kristy action, more BFF moments with Kali and her other girlfriends in hell, and more of the world building that made the first two books so enjoyable. I can't tell if ESPRIT DE CORPSE was the end of the series, but it tied up a lot of ends from the first two books in The Reluctant Reaper series, and if you're curious about how Kristy ends up, you should definitely check it out.

This third book in the series has all the fun Kirsty action that I loved about the first two.Read more
