This CD appears to be identical to his 2010 CD titled 34 NUMBER ONES, which actually has 37 tracks. If you already have that CD, you do not need this one. Why does Sony do this? They have done the same thing with The Essential Brooks & Dunn, which is the same Cd as #1'S AND THEN SOME.

Yes, this is a re-release of 34 NUMBER ONES under a different name. If you do a little research about Alan Jackson, you will find out that he changed recording labels. Therefore, 34 NUMBER ONES can't be released under the same name anymore. 34 NUMBER ONES is out of circulation. It has been re-released under this new name. It's not a rip-off. Come on! Give Alan some credit for being a great singer and true to country music.

I'll admit this right up front... when I began (gingerly!) dipping my toes into the "waters" of country music back in the mid-90s, Alan Jackson's honky tonk sound was a little "too" countrified for my novice taste. However, as the years went on, I developed a real appreciation for the broad spectrum of the genre, and country became my music preference. Mr. Jackson and his music (so much of which he writes himself) grew on me... quickly! (And how can you not just love a guy who grew up sleeping in a hallway in a tiny home that was built around his grandpa's tool shed?)

For Christmas this past year, I was looking forward to beefing up the country music section of a CD collection I'd begun many years ago for my husband, knowing an Alan Jackson CD would be one of the purchases. It was so confusing when I saw all of the various compilations available, but once I compared each "greatest hits" CD song by song, this was by far the best one for us, and for any one else who doesn't already have a selection of his CDs... unless you're only interested in his most recent music - there are no songs from his last three CDs (2010's "Freight Train", 2012's "Thirty Miles West" or 2013's "The Bluegrass Album") included in this 2-disc "Essential" CD.

What it DOES include is a super nice selection of his biggest hits over an 18 year span (1990-2008), from 10 of his dozen studio albums during that time period, along with some extras!

Before I bought this CD, I did my homework. YES, this CD is the same as "34 Number Ones," but what would you rather have on the front of your CD, a big ol' Number 1, or a picture of Alan Jackson??? How can people downgrade this CD because they bought it and discovered it was too similar to "34 Number Ones?" They obviously failed to do their homework and their negative reviews are not a fair assessment of the music on this CD. Anyways...

I used to cringe when I heard country music. I don't know why; I just didn't care for the sound. Then I heard, "Remember When." Oh, my, goodness. That song cut straight to my heart, and I had to hear more of Alan. I'm so glad I gave him a chance. My kids make fun of me because I listen to these CDs every day now. (Yet they sing along and want to come to his concert with me.) Two CD's, how perfect! One for the kitchen and one for singin' along in the shower. The CDs are very country, but I am beginning to appreciate the different instruments and the glimpses of Alan's life that he incorporates into his songs. Some of the songs are fun, some are thoughtful, and all of them...sung with that smooth, mellow voice. The songs have a way of sinking into your heart, mind and soul, and you catch yourself singing them always. So, here's the warning: When you least expect it, you may catch yourself singing, "Where I come from, it's cornbread and chicken..." :)

His songs will touch your heart and lift your spirits. "The Essential Alan Jackson" is great overall, a really good price for a great collection.

Alan Jackson is my favorite country music artist who makes great and memorable songs. Awesome 2 disc CD set! When I started listening to more Alan Jackson several months ago, I decided to buy some CDs. I didn't want to start out with a 10-12 song CD, so I bought this. 37 of his best songs in this set is awesome! Some of my favorite songs on this (in no particular order) are: Here in the Real World, Chattahoochee, Summertime Blues, Gone Country, As She's Walking Away, Little Bitty, Where I come From, Where Were You when the World Stopped Turning, Drive, and Country Boy. I love all the songs on this, but those were some of my favorites. I'd recommend this to anyone who loves country music and Alan Jackson music. It packs a lot of songs in for just 2 discs and none of the songs are bad. Definitely buy this if you have not yet. I bought this several months ago and I listen to it time and time again and never get tired of it.

A great album at a great price with all of my favorites on it! Just right in size--more of his hits than the smaller "Greatest Hits" albums and more reasonably priced than the larger ones. The Goldilocks of his Greatest Hits!
