This is the first CD of theirs I’ve acquired where they perform vocal duets – on all my other recordings of theirs, Sonny is usually featured only on the harmonica, with the exception of an occasional “whoop”, which is his trademark holler. The pair tackle blues songs of their own composition, traditional blues and folk songs and a few songs by other blues singers. I sometimes enjoy listening to them intently and concentrating on their amazing sense of harmony, or even just putting them on for some background music while doing something else. Either way, they are extremely enjoyable as great talent always is.
A few of the tracks are solo efforts of either performer. While their amazing chemistry makes their duets shine, the solos are interesting in their own right. A few tracks are accompanied by additional musicians.
This two-CD set contains a total of 40 tracks, with nary a clinker in the bunch. If you have never heard them, this set is an excellent introduction. If you are already familiar with them, be assured that this compilation is up to their usual standard. When it comes to acoustic blues, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee are the real McCoy!
