The Essential Feminist Reader (Modern Library Classics) Paperback – September 18, 2007
Purchase options and add-ons
The Essential Feminist Reader is the first anthology to present the full scope of feminist history. Prizewinning historian Estelle B. Freedman brings decades of teaching experience and scholarship to her selections, which span more than five centuries. Moving beyond standard texts by English and American thinkers, this collection features primary source material from around the globe, including short works of fiction and drama, political manifestos, and the work of less well-known writers.
Freedman’s cogent Introduction assesses the challenges facing feminism, while her accessible, lively commentary contextualizes each piece. The Essential Feminist Reader is a vital addition to feminist scholarship, and an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the history of women.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2019This book is a great chronological anthology of feminism. For each piece of writing, there is a small preview about it and the author. It really helped me with my dissertation and understanding the perspectives of each author. It also made me curious about some authors and their work, so I ended up doing more research in other books/articles. I definitely recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2020This book a well-explained, succinct collection of some of the most important moments throughout the history of the feminist movement. Tons of great perspectives are at play, and all are given equal weight by Freedman. Great overall!

- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2009The Essential Feminist Reader is exactly that - stories/essays/letters involving the history of feminism and its journey into modern times. Is this a book full of theories and psychological jargon? No, although there are a few essays that are written for the "advanced" feminist, if there is such a thing. I've cited this book in many analytical essays for professors as well as presentations for lower-level, undergraduate students.
Simply put - this is an excellent start for ANY person who is interested in feminism and/or women's history.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2015I purchased this book for a graduate level class, Contemporary Feminist Thought. It did not disappoint. The background blurbs at the beginning of each piece helped to set the stage and context for the reading to come.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2023Downloaded this book for my Kindle because it is required reading for a course that I am taking. When I opened it up to complete the reading for the assigned module, I found that the downloaded book is entirely illegible. Not only is the text sideways, but when. you zoom in, the resolution becomes to fuzzy too read. What a waste of money and time that I will now need to find a hard copy quickly enough to complete my research paper. Amazon needs to make this right.

I loved it. It's a great compilation of wonderful works, speeches, essays, literature and excerpts from great feminist texts. It gives you an idea about the history of feminism. It covers non-western feminist writers as well. I think it's a necessary and great reader.
