The title is misleading: there is very little of Hayek's actual writings here. Each chapter starts with a paragraph or two from something Hayek wrote, after which Boudreaux writes at length about the idea that he wants the reader to grasp.
It's about Hayek's IDEAS, as explained by Boudreaux. Boudreaux is a pretty good explainer.

Some of this book was difficult for me to read because I don't have much knowledge of economics. It helped me to see the virtue of keeping the government out of economics and letting it be people driven.

This book gives a very good explanation of why socialism and interventionism does not work. Unfortunately the US is headed more and more towards socialism and economic disaster.

Hayek for beginners. This short book is a very well written introduction to the ideas of the most important economist of the twentieth century. Should be required reading for AP Economics and freshman classes

As a former computer consultant trying to learn economics, I find this a most interesting read. It actually spells out why the "capitalist" system is good and any other form of government control from the top is doomed! This man does not get caught up in Keynes spend and and control from the government. He foreshadowed the fall of Communism! While he wrote in the 40s, I believe his ideas are appropriate today.

Professor Boudreaux has provided the general reader with an introduction to one of the best minds of the 20th Century. For all who love liberty and want to understand how true economic prosperity and liberty can emerge from the voluntary cooperation among free citizens, and how the same has been thwarted by politicians and bureaucrats in pursuit of their agendas, read this inexpensive Kindle download and become enlightened by Hayek.

Worthwhile summary with a clear approach to the subject. An excellent addition to the series. I recommend reviewing the series for more insight.

An excellent introduction. The forward was written by someone who has lived under communism/socialism. He truly appreciates Hayek because he has lived under governments where Hayek's words were not heeded. Especially today with the economic problems that Europe and America are facing, Hayek's writings are more valuable than ever.

Excellent summary of Hayek's economic and political ideas
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 19, 2019Verified Purchase
A very readable short summary of Hayek's ideas.
The writer grew up under Soviet communism, so understandably has a utopian view of Hayek's free market ideas.
He gives the ideas very clearly and concisely nonetheless, saving the reader from having to wade through a lot of heavy academic text.
This quote at the end of chapter 1 sums up why I do not share the writer's rosy view of Hayek's philosophy:
"Market prices, as we’ll see in the next section, guide each of us to act as if we know about—and as if we care about—the preferences and well-being of millions of strangers."
Are we human beings not capable of knowing and caring about others without the tyranny of money breathing down our neck?
I feel that the regulatory power of broadening democracy is also left out of Hayek's political reckonings.
But surely the ultimate reason why we must urgently put Hayek's ideas behind us is that they have nothing to say about the environment.
And if we don't make that our priority now, we may very soon have no society for his markets to regulate

Underestimated & not fully appreciated by the establishment. A concise iteration.

F Hayek was one of the pillars of sound finance and a just but also sustainable society. His arguments withstand scrutiny unlike Keynes, whose ideologies were adopted by the mainstream politicians as they were more acceptable to a socialist leaning society, and promoting the Austrian alternative, would involve occasional hardships which would lose votes for the party choosing that method. BUT, we wouldn't be in this awful position now.

Great read for a summary of great ideas
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 15, 2018Verified Purchase
I chose to read this book as I wanted to start learning about economics. Nothing serious, just a hobby, and a more well informed view on things. I looked at famous economists for reading material and came across Hayek`s name.
This book explains ideas in a brief, easy to understand way with great analogies, scenarios and examples to aid understanding. Cannot recommend this books enough
