About the author

Eric Mack is a Professor of Philosophy and a Faculty Member of the Murphy Institute of Political Economy at Tulane University. He is the author of John Locke (Bloomsbury Academic), a sympathetic account of Locke’s classical liberal contentions and arguments and Libertarianism (Polity Press), a study of the nature and force of the philosophical arguments offered on behalf of political libertarianism. He is also the editor of Auberon Herbert’s The Right and Wrong of Compulsion of the State and Other Essays (Liberty Press) and Herbert Spencer’s The Man versus the State and Other Essays (Liberty Press).
Through his scholarly articles and books he has played a major role in the philosophical development and defense of political libertarianism. Many of his most important academic essays have been devoted to the moral foundations of natural rights – including rights of self-ownership and rights to acquire and exercise discretionary control over property -- and to filling in major gaps within libertarian theory that have pointed out by its egalitarian and socialist critics. He is a leading expert in the political philosophies of John Locke, F.A. Hayek, and Robert Nozick.
Mack is an avid hiker and backpacker in the mountains and high desert country of Colorado and Utah.
