This collection is really quite interesting. With a couple of unissued tracks, b-sides, soundtrack hits, unknown gems, this collection is a good place to go for those who only have his hits from prior compliations.

John's voice is really quite unique and very human. He has the uncanny ability to make it sound like he is singing to "you".

After this, I do recomend you seek out the rest of his albums. You will not be disappointed. :)

"World in a Bottle" didn't appear on any previous album and appears to be a reject, I cannot explain why! An orchestral interlude shows that the tune is as exceptional as the words.

Waite's songs are very personal and distinguish themselves from the "clever" lyrics that have dominated chart music for the last 30 years.

Well this is an odd collection. On the surface, the idea of a 20-song Essential John Waite album spanning his time in The Babys as well as his solo career is quite appealing. Unfortunately this 1992 collection doesn’t deliver as well as it could/should have.

While Essential John Waite does cover his career, it’s done in a slipshod, almost random way. Entire albums are skipped completely, as are hit songs you’d expect to find on a collection like this. They do include “Missing You,” which is Waite’s biggest solo hit, but you have to make it through 19 random songs, including some that appear to be previously unreleased, to get there. The label also didn’t make any special effort to clean up the sound quality on this budget collection.

If you run across a cheap copy, Essential John Waite does an OK job as a “John Waite for beginners” collection. Still, if you’re already familiar with Waite’s career, you’re much better off with The Complete John Waite Volume 1: Falling Backwards, which actually does have his hit songs, includes his Bad English hits and has been remastered.

I enjoy this CD very much. Covering the years that John was with THE BABY'S & BAD ENGLISH, and his solo projects. True, one CD cannot include everything from his career. But you do get a generous 20 song compilation. A highly individualistic vocal style, with the songwriting abilities as well. Highly recommended! And for the current used price, it's a no brainer.
