    Excellent film about an Afghan escapee in the wintery woods of Poland.
    Yes, the pace of the film is not of a Hollywood standard , but this does not affect the intensity of the story. Some reviewers call this gripping film slow (when did that become a bad word?) : a man runs for his life in a snow-covered landscape in a country unknown to him while being chased by a large number of soldiers who want him dead ; to survive he has to kill several people , sleep in the hay in a trough for deer, eat hallucinogenic berries and compete with a baby for his mother's milk. All of this in less than 48 hrs. Of course, there's a thunderous lack of explosions and dialogue. I guess in a world where we get served our daily dose of decapitations , and where the citizens of any mid-western town in America have to look into the barrels of police machineguns, films like these are just too tame.

    Maybe the best thing about this movie is not having to hear Vinny's whinny voice. Basically it's a silent film. For it's budget I guess it was fine, but what they were saying overall is kind of vague and they should have shown more of the evil water boarding and it's message would have been better understood and been a more powerful film.

    I have been a Vincent Gallo fan since the movie Buffalo 66 which i still argue is one of my favorite Love Stories. Having said that i watch anything that has Vincent Gallos name attached to it. I will warn you if you are expecting a fast paced, action packed blockbuster, than you will not like this movie. I cannot say this is a movie I will recommend to others. I think it may be a matter of taste. I think it is one of those movies I chose because as i have said, i am very interested in what this particular actor writes, directs or chooses to act in. I guess i was expecting more because i have loved most of what i have seen from Vincent Gallos body of work. This movie has almost no dialogue and moves very very slowly. There is one scene in particular with a young pregnant woman that many may find disturbing to watch. I do think the movie was trying to say many things about war and the amazing inner workings of most humans to do whatever it takes to survive. I did think about this movie a number of days after watching it and that is usually a sign for me that i either liked it or learned something from it. I think the best thing i can say is it is not a movie for those who would enjoy most of the movies showing at big complexes today - It is not for fans of Ironman or Family Guy - if you watch independent film this might be a movie you would like or at least leave you thinking about life in general.

    I can put up with little to no dialogue however, most of the things that happen to him along the way are so Unrealistic. First he walks for at least an hour BAREFOOT in snow and freezing weather yet, he can still walk up, kill those 2 guys and drive off. then, the trap, he just slides his foot out of the boot, then falls in a freezing lake and comes out not only puts on the dead soldiers uniform, then Runs off, apparently the foot and chewed up hand healed themselves. Every time he got hurt, he just appeared to heal, none of the wounds seem to be a problem, there goes 45 minutes I'll never get back, couldn't finish watching, glad it was part of Prime or, I would have been really Pissed off I had to pay for this

    Jack Nicholson said this was the best film of 2010. I'm not sure about that, but it is definitely a very well made, thought provoking film that provides a perspective of the war on terror from the other side. This isn't a Rambo style shoot em up film. It's an enigmatic movie and, in my experience, exceptional, powerful and poetic. A challenging film which plays strongly to subjectivity. If you need your movies spoon fed to you and don't want to do any thinking, this probably isn't the film to for you. As the protagonist, Vincent Gallo is amazing and its obvious why he won Best Actor for this role at Venice. It's the strongest performance I've seen by any actor in recent memory. Highly recommended. This DVD is excellent also. It is an import, but everything is in English, and it played just fine in my USA DVD player.

    Ce film est surestimé. Dans le genre on a connu mieux, beaucoup mieux. ça reste un survival honnête, atypique, étrange, mais l'affaire manque de souffle. On peut expliquer ça par un manque d'ambition dans tous les secteurs : plans, musique, montage, scénario... Il n'y a pas de quoi crier au chef-d'oeuvre. Les 20 premières minutes sont tout de même intenses.

    A very unlikely story about a captured enemy combatant who escapes in Poland and kills to survive. While Vincent Gallo does a good job portraying the enemy combatant, the scenario is just awful. It makes the US and Polish forces look totally incompetent, who can't track an escape. Sure, using helicopter, dogs etc they just can't capture him in a deep snow covered terrain apart from that all the boots and clothes fit him exactly from the killed people too. This film is a waste of time and nothing else but tries to create empathy for the enemy combatant, it can be taken as a pro propaganda movie for enemy combatants!

    Man sagt, es ist ein Politthriller. Ist es wirklich einer? Vielleicht wird das Thema hier nur benutzt, um uns einen Einblick in einen Menschen zu vermitteln, der durch sein Erlebnis hier, nur zu tierischen Handlungen fähig ist.
    Ein Taliban-Kämpfer (Vincent Gallo) wird in seiner Heimat von den US-Truppen gefangengenommen, nachdem er aus seiner Sicht in Notwehr drei US-Soldaten getötet hat. Er wird gefoltert nach CIA-Methoden, wie es wohl auch in Wirklichkeit ist, und dann mit vielen anderen Gefangenen nach Europa, ins verschneite Ostpolen, gebracht. Als dort in einem Fahrzeugtransport sein Fahrzeug verunglückt, kann er entkommen und versucht dann im weiteren Verlauf des Filmes, sich durch die verschneiten Wälder zu kämpfen.
    Wahrscheinlich ist diese Verfilmung schon ein guter Film, aber ich finde ihn nicht schön und irgendwann wünschte ich mir das Ende herbei, zumal ich diesem Charakter des Taliban-Kämpfers richtigerweise keine Überlebenschance einräumte.
    Er ist ein Soldat der Taliban. Ob er ein Extremer ist, kann man hier eigentlich nicht erkennen. Auf jeden Fall hat er eine ganz andere Kultur, die wir hier wohl nicht verstehen. Ob der Regisseur Jerzy Skolimowski diese versteht, weiß ich nicht, aber ich hoffe dieser Film verlangte auch nicht ein Verständnis für seine Kultur, wovon ich jetzt mal ausgehe.
    Dieser Soldat sieht sich genötigt, drei US-Soldaten zu töten. Man sieht seine Angst vor ihnen und er glaubt in Notwehr zu handeln. Diese Aktion bringt ihn in US-Gefangenschaft, die für ihn nicht so angenehm ist und ihn schließlich nach Ostpolen führt. Zuerst auch noch im Gewahrsam der US-Streitkräfte. In dieser Gefangenschaft versucht der Regisseur Jerzy Skolimowski uns Zuschauer in den ruhigen Phasen des Taliban-Kämpfers (Vincent Gallo) Einblick in dessen Fantasie zu geben. Vielleicht gut, aber richtig deuten konnte ich das nicht. Ich verstehe diese Lebensstrukturen dieses Mannes zu wenig. Nur konnte ich in späteren Fantasieeinblicke, die dieser Taliban-Kämpfer öfters hat, in dem er mal kurz ruht, bzw. schläft, erkennen, dass eine Szene, wovon er träumte, in seinem Leben kurze Zeit später wirklich passierte. Auch das habe ich nicht verstanden. Nun, in Polen gelingt ihm die Flucht durch einen Autounfall und er kann in den verschneiten Wäldern dort entkommen. Nun wird er verfolgt von den US-Soldaten, die er im Laufe des Filmes doch abschütteln kann. Auch die strenge, kalte Natur von Ostpolen hat er für mich trotz allem noch gut im Griff. Wenn auch seine Mittel dazu für mich schrecklich sind. Im Endeffekt scheitert er für mich an der fremden Kultur für ihn. So ist er nicht in der Lage, gewisse helfende Strukturen so zu erkennen, dass sie ihm wirklich helfen. Er killt Leute, von denen er sich bedroht fühlt und versucht keine menschlichen Kontakte aufzubauen. Das kann er vielleicht von seinem Charakter her auch nicht. Dem Fischer klaut er den Fisch ohne zu fragen. Bei der Frau will er sich auch nur bedienen an deren Brüsten. Eigentlich läuft er herum wie ein Tier, das nur sein Überleben im Kopf hat und in keinster Weise vorausschauen kann. Als ich das erkannte, wusste ich, dass er keine Chance hat. Da konnte ihm die Frau (Emmanuelle Seigner), die ihn fand und zuhause zusammenflickte, wohl auch nicht mehr helfen. Schon am nächsten Morgen flüchtet er weiter, zwar jetzt mit einem Pferd von ihr, aber nicht mehr sehr lange.
    Muss man solche Charaktere im Film vorstellen? Gut, der Filmtitel heißt übersetzt "wesentliches Töten" und das wird auch hier gezeigt. Aber welche Message hat der Film wirklich?
    Auf jeden Fall ist dieser Film kein schlechter Film, weil hier alles, was gespielt wird, sehr gut ist. Jeder Schauspieler ist gut eingesetzt und realistisch herübergebracht. Einzig die Taten des Taliban-Kämpfers und der Lebensablauf dadurch, sind irgendwie nicht so schön und spannend zum Zuschauen. Als Bewertung sehe ich drei bis vier Sterne. Nur nach dem letzten Bild, als der Taliban-Kämpfer (Vincent Gallo) halb auf seinem Pferd hängend, dieses an der Seite mit Blut vollspuckt, dachte ich, jetzt ist der Regisseur Jerzy Skolimowski ja wirklich auch darauf bedacht, extreme visuelle Elemente aufzufahren um eine bleibende Erinnerung für den Film zu hinterlassen. Das kostete für mich einen Stern.
    Abschließend ist es ein nacktes Überlebensdrama ohne ein Gefühl für irgendjemanden zu haben. Als Empfehlung ist er schon erwähnenswert. Nur ich, nachdem ich ihn gesehen habe, werde ihn wohl nicht mehr ansehen. Es sei denn, jemand zeigt mir eine neue Message, mit der ich den Film vielleicht anders sehen würde.

    One of my lesser favourites from the UK Artificial Eye bluray collection. Story is ok, just a bit boring. Vincent Gallo was average but I feel any half decent actor could have spent an hour and a half running through the snow hardly saying anything. He has a huge ego and he's certainly not as talented as he likes to think he is, and he's been in some real stinkers. Check him out in 'Tetro' which is decent. Along with 'elles' and 'Zidane:21st Century Portrait', this title is my least favourite bluray from AE so far. Rent it.
