"I rarely do book reviews, and I sometimes struggle with myself on books I end up choosing to promote. I did just that with "Essential Liberty," and this surprised me because it's a well-written, movie-paced page-turner. My problem was being able to relate some of the characters to plausible individuals relatable to my own experiences, until I realized that I was being guilty of shallow, knee-jerk reactions. And that's where I found real strength in what I first perceived as potential disqualifiers."--David Codrea, National Gun Rights Examiner, Field Editor of Guns Magazine
"Essential Liberty, by author Rob Olive, tackles our greatest fears: The widespread prohibition and subsequent confiscation of firearms from law-abiding citizens, and the resulting moral, ethical, and constitutional crises. This isn't just about guns, it's about civil liberties, families, friendships, and abuses of power. I highly recommend Essential Liberty; this one is a "must read" for Second Amendment advocates and political fence sitters alike."--Keith Wood, Host of the National Rifle Association's "Bullshooters" Blog
"Consider Essential Liberty required reading for anyone who knows how fragile liberty is and how worthy it is of fighting for. It is, indeed, worth dying for and that implies, of course, that it is worth killing for. And that, perhaps, makes this book even more required reading for those who would undermine our liberty. If you liked John Ross's Unintended Consequences and the Matthew Bracken Enemies Foreign and Domestic trilogy, you will no doubt find Essential Liberty impossible to put down."--Kurt Hofmann, "Armed and Safe" Blog, Columnist - Gun Rights Examiner
About the Author
Rob Olive enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps fresh out of high school and served four years. He holds a bachelors degree in history from Oregon State University and has operated an insurance agency for over two decades. He lives in Oregon with his wife and three sons. Essential Liberty is Rob’s first novel. The concept grew out of his fascination with the one characteristic that differentiates the United States of America from any other country in history—the importance its Founders placed on individual liberty.

What if the Supreme Court rules disarmament is constitutional? Will sheriffs who previously swore to resist unconstitutional firearms laws decide to support disarmament because it’s now considered constitutional?
Essential Liberty serves as scenario training, just like tactical pistol classes help people acquire skills to survive a potentially lethal attack. Like tactical training, Essential Liberty takes today’s news and political climate and moves it just a little farther into a possible future. One of the challenges to writing a good novel is to create a realistic setting and plot, and author Rob Olive achieved this.
Most crime/adventure novels fail to address how real political and social dynamics impact current events and social policy. Considering that Olive took on complex and hot-button subject matter, and a threat that most of us prefer ignoring, Essential Liberty is worth reading because it successfully portrays today’s news as a parable of what can happen if good people do nothing.
Nothing is quite as chilling as a suspense fiction book that slightly parallels reality with a twist... yet is still plausible in a future reality if certain things (do or do not) come to pass. While a fan of action fiction from Clive Cussler to Lincoln Child, I stumbled onto Rob Olive's book after reading an interview with him. After finishing, I must say I'm impressed by his ability to keep a reader on edge with a realistic view of a drastic federal initiative.
Character development and dialogue were both excellent, as was the military and political aspect of the main characters (at least from my viewpoint). Olive doesn't pull punches or shots, no sacred cows or main characters are safe in Essential Liberty, and that might be a good thing! Thinking about what makes us a republic, what all our freedoms mean to us, and when does a country see those rights start to slip? Weighty topics. I do appreciate the resilience of Amercians that pops up throughout the book, no matter the cost at some point there are those that will refuse to do the direct orders they are given as they violate every code they are sworn to uphold.
Don't get me wrong, this is an exciting book and at times you feel immersed in a Jason Bourne book... which is a good thing! Give it a read and see what you think, I hope Mr. Olive writes more in the future as he has a talent for detail and an engaging storyline.
