"Vivid backdrop...thorough research...very hot." - Avonna from The Romance Reviews
"Engrossing and dramatic.... Tantalizing details." -J.L. Gribble, author of Steel Victory

"What a superb fantasy historical! I was captivated and enchanted and enthralled...You will absolutely not be disappointed." - Anna, Goodreads review
"Cara McKinnon does a masterful job of transporting her readers to magical 19th century Scotland. Her detailed descriptions of historically accurate attire and etiquette helped to fully immerse me in a story that I was unwilling to put down until the very end. Engaging characters, powerful emotions; all with a unique and captivating method used to describe the casting of spells." -Christina Robbins, author of Seeking Solace
From the Author
Etta, the main character of Essential Magic, was my primary entry point into this alternate era. I was all set to write a completely different story when she walked onto my page and drew me into her world. She's an Appalachian witch, untrained in her magical skills, and provides a nice outsider viewpoint to London society in 1895. Her guide to the unfamiliar landscape is Mal--a mage who hasn't done magic in years after an accident. So on one side we have a woman who desperately wants to learn to cast spells, and on the other a man who refuses to. What a perfect set up for two people to fall in love and have to meet somewhere in the middle!
is the first book in a series that mashes up several different genres. The Fay of Skye is part gaslamp fantasy and part steamy romance, with generous helpings of mystery and a sprinkling of historical fiction on top. The settings range from London to Scotland (so far) with upcoming books traveling onto the Continent for the Great War.
If you like romance, fantasy, alternate history, politics, magic systems, family sagas, war stories, or all of the above, The Fay of Skye is the series for you!
