The second edition of this book is virtually a new book. It is the only comprehensive text on the safety of essential oils, the first review of essential oil/drug interactions, and it provides detailed essential oil constituent data not found in any other text. Much of the existing text has been re-written, and 80% of the text is completely new. There are 400 comprehensive essential oil profiles and almost 4000 references. There are new chapters on the respiratory system, the cardiovascular system, the urinary system, the digestive system and the nervous system.

For each essential oil there is a full breakdown of constituents, and a clear categorization of hazards and risks, with recommended maximum doses and concentrations. There are also 206 Constituent Profiles.

This book has been great so far! It helps us use the oils the right way. Like what people can use them, what portions, and what time. It has so many profiles as well! I also notice that in the quality section there are other oils that might smell alike. For example. if you want to purchase a Champaca (a rare oil), how ever, you need an easy version of that, then you can go for Ylang Ylang (that it is sweet/pungent, and sedative).

Right now, I'm renting the ebook; I wanted to see if it had (primarily) the safety data that I was looking for to pass along to customers. IT DOES. Wow, it's just awesome.

While I do think that a lot more research has been done on EOs since this was last rewritten, and perhaps Tisserand and Young are a tad conservative overall - I would MUCH rather be too conservative in how I represent the safety of a particular oil versus being too liberal or uninformed. If a purchaser of an oil chooses to ignore what I say, that's on them, then - I feel like I've done what I can to inform them of the risks.

I particularly liked the inclusion of mainstream medication interactions. I'm a little tired of saying "check with your doctor" all the time - doctors mostly don't know a thing about oils and can't really give a solid answer.

I also was particular interested in learning about Wintergreen and all its risks. I. Had. No. Idea....none. I've since pulled it from my online lineup of oils that I sell - at this point, I'll only sell it when I can be face to face with someone to really discuss the risks in using Wintergreen. And it's not that Wintergreen isn't safe - it IS, but only when used properly and with the proper cautions regarding salicylates and kids as well as the risk of salicylate reactions, which many people have and don't know.

When my rental period is up, I'll be buying the hardbound version of this book for sure!

Don’t let my 4 stars on this confuse you, it’s a very informative book scientifically (it is written for professionals) but as a layperson I was hoping for a more expansive antidotal informative read. The clinical information does prompt me to dive deeper into a expanded lesson on EO and I am enjoying.
I hate to have a book setting around that I don’t utilize regularly so I’m am pleased that I am able to use it in this way though it has evolved from purpose that I purchased it.

Ha! I bought this book because I am studying to be a certified aromatherapist and my instructor keeps mentioning this book. I thought I was going to read it cover to cover at record speed so I could soak in all the info....I was wrong. This is the size of a textbook. The first couple chapters have reading info and the rest of the book is an index to reference.

The information in this book is amazing! There is sooooo much. I will be using it every time I formulate something or need to know the info in regards to a particular oil. I would recommend this to anyone else on the certified aromatherpaist path or eve the extreme essential oil enthusiest.

A 'must own' if you are using essential oils

Essentially, the whole book is a giant, science-based warning.

The book, in a nutshell, tells you how harmful an essential oil can be if taken orally or applied topically beyond certain recommended doses. The book, however, doesn't tell you how to use an essential oil medicinally or how an essential oil could be used medicinally. One thing the book does not have that I wish it had was research on the inhalation of essential oils via steam, a diffuser, or other. It only discusses oral intake and topical application.

I do not agree with reviewers who have taken away review stars because the book does not fully discuss the medicinal uses of essential oils. The book is titled "Essential Oil Safety", not "Essential Oil: Applications and Uses". In the introduction, however, the book does cite research papers that have reviewed the pharmaco-therapeutic potential of essential oils. So if a reader is interested in the medicinal uses of essential oils they may read those papers.

The book alludes to numerous studies and even cautions when studies are inconsistent, limited, need more research, or when doses should be reevaluated and revised. The scientific citations alone are worth the book's price since one can then explore the literature related to an essential oil of interest. This scientific approach to essential oils is a breath of fresh air when compared to the multitude of dangerous essential oil bloggers that think they know what they are doing.

I have not put this down since I received it. Yes it is a bit over my head as I am no chemistry major, and I find myself having to look up many words to know what they are talking about as it written like a textbook. But, it is all based on facts and studies, gives recommendations on whether it is actually safe or not orally, skin sensitivities, the safe amounts, etc. As I'm new to essential oils, I wanted to do it right, without all of the misleading info I was sure I was seeing on some EO pages for big oil companies. After reading a few pages, I know those companies are pushing products unsafely at times, and I am glad I purchased this book. You can't put price on this kind of quality. I bought a used version to save a few $, but still worth every penny!!!!!.

I just got myself some tabs for easy finding of pages, as I have to go to glossary a lot, and it is a huge book. It has already made it easier, and not so overwhelming. I am already finding other books I've purchased recently inadequate comparably.

I'd rank this as THE Reference source for just what the book is called, Essential Oil Safety. I am getting certified as an aromatherapist and have to admit when this book arrive (very heavy and loaded with more information than I could imagine) I had to just set it aside - not sure if I was ready to wade into it. But once I started using the book to look things up, instead of seeing it as a book that needs to be 'read' from cover to cover. It's not just about the essential oils but also covers the components and how and why they do what they do as well as some drug interactions. There is still alot of research to be done and components that have yet to be studied, but this one book could significantly progress our education about how to use these gifts from nature effectively. Too bad there aren't more books out there like this one. I'd recommend it to anyone serious about studying Aromatherapy.

A must for anyone selling essential oils

Essential oils are trending highly at the moment and people with a day or two's training are selling them.

They are extremely potent and its very easy to unintionally cause harm to friends and family if you don't know about the dosage and use of them. This book is vital for anyone doing so. It's not going to tell you that lavender is good for stress etc, it's going to tell you about the scientific effects of oils, not the fluffy multi level marketing company spiel - some of which is down right dangerous, like ingesting essential oils.

Robert Tisserand has been involved with essential oils his entire life and is the godfather of the EO industry. He's also travelled the world giving lectures on the use of essential oils and I've had the pleasure is attending one of his talks. As someone who has their own natural skincare brand, Robert's book is the first source I reach for when I'm looking for oil safety information.

Be safe, be educated and get your information from multiple sources, not just the MLM company with pretty brochures.

I ordered this because I am taking a Certified Aromatherapist course (due to MLM companies not following safety protocols at all). This book is a must have, it's definitely a text book though so you have to know what you are reading. Lots of chemistry involved. If you aren't taking a course and are just some sales rep, pass on this. You need to know actual course material to understand what this book is trying to teaching you.
