From the Manufacturer
The biggest screen-to-body ratio of any phone! With a stunning 5.71-inch edge-to-edge Quad HD Display, you get a large screen in a phone that still fits comfortably in one hand. So you can enjoy more of what’s on your screen without all those intrusive bezels.
Crafted with space-age strength, titanium, ceramic, and Gorilla Glass 5. Its space-age strength helps withstand your day-to-day. And there's no branding or logos anywhere on the device. So your phone is more of an expression of who you are—because it’s yours.
With a 13MP Dual-Camera and Portrait Mode, your pictures look great. And the Essential 360 Camera is big enough to easily capture everything around you in 4K — but small enough to fit in your pocket. So it can take it with you everywhere.
PH-1 comes with a whopping 128GB of storage. So you can easily store all your photos, 4K and 360 videos, games, and more without worrying about running out of space—or needing to spend more money on external storage options.
PH-1 runs pure Android. No unnecessary apps, preloads, or anything that gets in your way of getting the latest Android updates and features. You get a smooth experience that is fast and fluid.
The Click Connector on Essential Phone makes using accessories easier than ever. They magnetically attach and power up using your PH-1. So you don’t need to charge your accessories to use them. And because the Click Connector will be on future Essential devices, you can use your current accessories with future Essential devices.

Freedom is Essential
How did you come up with the idea for this product?
I know people are going to ask me a lot of questions about why I started this company. Why didn’t I just travel the world, ride my motorcycle, tinker with my robots, hang out at my bakery with friends and family. And to be honest I still do ask myself that sometimes…but not too often. So why did I create Essential? Well, my hardware engineers wanted me to talk about how we are bringing real passion and craftsmanship back into this category. My software engineers wanted me to talk about our vision for making all devices, even those we don't make ourselves, play well together. My partners wanted me to talk about how we are using methods that could change how successful technology companies are built forever. And this is all true. But the real reason is because of what happened during a night out with an old friend of mine. As the night went on we inevitably began talking about what we didn't like about the current state of technology. Less and less choice. More and more unnecessary features cluttering our lives. An increasing sea of products that didn't work with one another… And just when I was about to drop another criticism it hit me: I am partly responsible for all of this. For all the good Android has done to help bring technology to nearly everyone it has also helped create this weird new world where people are forced to fight with the very technology that was supposed to simplify their lives. Was this what we had intended? Was this the best we could do? I left that night reflecting deeply on what was great and what was frustrating with the current state of technology today. After another long talk with my friend we decided that I needed to start a new kind of company using 21st century methods to build products for the way people want to live in the 21st century.
What makes your product special?
This is what we believe: • Devices are your personal property. We won’t force you to have anything on them you don’t want to have. • We will always play well with others. Closed ecosystems are divisive and outdated. • Premium materials and true craftsmanship shouldn’t be just for the few. • Devices shouldn’t become outdated every year. They should evolve with you. • Technology should assist you so that you can get on with enjoying your life. • Simple is always better.
What has been the best part of your startup experience?
I have used the above principles to inform everything Essential is doing and they have helped me attract some of the best and brightest people from all over the world to join me in bringing this vision to life. We won’t achieve everything we hope on day one, but if you’re one of those people who also thinks it’s time for something new, please have a look at www.essential.com to learn more.

I own and use a lot of smart phones, current daily driver a Note 8 (and an LG 30 Plus for the fabulous wide angle camera).
This is setting up to be a real classic that I hold on to, like I just bought another brand new Note 4 Duos and another brand new Nokia 1020.
The rewarding tactility of holding this phone in your hand, the build, the weight, the screen, the lean mean OS, really has to be experienced.
When I turned it on I could update it one update after another to the latest and greatest Android.
I am so used to using old versions of the OS that Samsung or whoever would get around to updating or maybe not.
What a fantastic thing to be running the latest without having to beg and wait.
If there's going to be the Essential Ph2, sign me up!!!
PS - I got mine in exclusive Amazon grey color. The feel of the matte ceramic back is fantastic. The worst thing so far with the initial experience is the screen wall paper. Came with some of the ugliest ever. Who chose these?
Charges quicker than the iPhone
A potato could literally take a better picture than this phone. If you like Snapchatting, Video Chatting, or just taking picture, DO NOT buy this phone. Although I enjoy photography thoroughly, I had bought this phone as a way to escape social media for the most part, so i just bring my actual camera along with me if I plan on taking any photos.
USB-C style Charger is dual ended, so youll have to buy another one with a USB end to connect to a standard charging brick or USB port.
Constantly freezes and crashes apps, ESPECIALLY those that utilize a camera such as Snapchat or Instagram.
*MY OVERALL BIGGEST ISSUE* holy keyboard lag Batman... Even just using the texting application, the keyboard lags. This was supposed to be fixed two updates ago, but I have yet to see improvment. If anything, I think the lag has gotten worse since owning the phone for just a month.
So right now, it seems that for the most part, the Essential Phone's cons have outweighed the pros. Do I feel robbed that I paid $280 for a phone that's not entirely functional all the time? Sure, maybe a little, but I still have full faith in the developers to release a few more much needed updates. The phone has plenty of power, memory, and processing capability to enable it to be a serious workhorse, unfortunately, the updates have not improved much of it's original slow and laggy state. *if you think you're phone and computer savvy, im highly confident that you could modify this phone to run a great deal smoother through accessing the developer settings.*
Overall from what I've noticed, the material quality and physical build of the entire phone is a 10/10, but software is a 2/10, as even the essentials are lacking in whats supposed to be selling point of this entire phone...
If you're extremely tech savvy and don't mind spending some time working on your phone, then this phone may just be everything you're looking for, but for the average consumer, until updates are released and a MUCH better camera is used, I'd suggest staying away.
If the phone continues to improve from this condition, I'll update this review. If the review is not updated, then these facts are still true about this phone.
I opened it up, powered it on, entered my Google info, and was greeted with no fewer than 5 updates. After running through that process, I test drove the phone for a day, and I was blown away! First, the Halo Gray variant has a fantastic feel to it, does not attract fingerprints like most finishes, and the phone looks and feels like what I'd consider a perfect formfactor. On the use side, this phone after all the updates is SMOOTH! Lightning quick, responsive, and beautiful interface. Not to mention, the battery life is easily one of the best in any Android phone I've used, handily beating my S9+. Today, 8/6, Android P was also released for the PH-1.
Any poor expectations I had for this phone have evaporated into nothing more than a forgotten thought, and I'm considering using it as my primary instead of my S9+, it's that good. (No OIS on the cameras, no Qi charging, and LCD instead of AMOLED are my only complaints. Seriously.) With all this, if there is never a PH-2 made, I will be extremely disappointed.
Hopefully, after skipping a cycle, Essential is able to get back on their feet and crank out a successor to the PH-1, with better day-one support and, as difficult as it may be, even further refinement to what I consider to be perhaps the quintessential Android phone. I'll be in line to buy it.
