About the Author
Rumi (1207-1273) is the foremost poet, famous for his lyrics and for his didactic epic Masnavi, a collection of mystical tales and discourse considered second only to Shahnameh. Rumi lived in the Seldjuk capital Konya, and his influence on literature, carried by his Sufism, spread with the expansion of the Ottoman Empire and lasted centuries.--This text refers to the mp3_cd edition.
The Essential Rumi is a rare and precious book that will stir the hearts of Rumi devotees and win many new converts.-- "Body Mind Spirit"
Delightful...Barks sparklingly demonstrates once again why his free-form interpretations of [Rumi's] poetry...have been a major impetus for the current Rumi vogue.-- "Publishers Weekly"
If Rumi is the most-read poet in America today, Coleman Barks is in good part responsible. His ear for the truly divine madness in Rumi's poetry is truly remarkable.-- "Huston Smith, bestselling author of The World's Religions"
The thirteenth-century Persian mystic's words continue to resonate, particularly in this translation, which offers a remarkably contemporary voice.-- "Oprah.com" --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

Something that you guys may find helpful is something my professor said, having taught Rumi for a decade or so: "Read Rumi at certain intervals in your life, and you will find that the poems that impacted you in one way, will change into something meaningful in your current life. Continue to read Rumi and you will be inspired."
Buy it. Just buy it.
I met Coleman last year. He's a sweet guy.
It was incredible to thank a person I'd admired for so long. Because of this very book.
Seriously. I read from this at my brother's wedding.
Buy it. It changed my life.
I discovered there are people out there who think like me. Across time and space.
Support his poetry career by purchasing this,
This is great for anyone interested in some moment of contemplation or wanting to share an interesting, highly readable book of philosophy.. Although Rumi was Muslim and Islamic scholars and philosophers hold him in high regard, the selections in this text are not overtly sectarian or Islamic. Rumi wrote on a huge variety of subjects, most notably love, and this collection captures that diversity.

Not Christian or Jew or Muslim, not Hindu,
Buddhist, Sufi or Zen. Not any religion
or cultural system. I am not from the East
or the West, not out of the ocean or up
from the ground, not natural or ethereal, not
composed of elements at all. I do not exist,
am not an entity in this world or the next,
did not descend from Adam and Eve or any
origin story. My place is placeless, a trace
of the traceless. Neither body or soul.
I belong to the beloved, have seen the two
worlds as one and that one call to and know
first, last, outer, inner, only that
breath breathing human being.
