After watching and loving "Chopped" and yet being confused by how the cooks know what spices to use, both my daughter and I wanted to know more--what spice goes with what? What is this spice used for? We've ordered (and returned) more than several books that purported to tell us just that. Then we found this one, and it was exactly what we needed. There's a description of each spice, some recipes, and a list of"Complements" and "Pairs Well With" over in the margin. There's even a little bit about what medicinal value(s) a certain spice might have.
There is more than one index, so there are several ways to find what you might be looking for. It has only 50 spices--you know, on account of who--other than professional chefs--would need more than that? The price is right--the only thing I'd change about this book (or any cookbook for that matter) would be a spiral binding. Otherwise, we are two very happy purchasers.

The title pretty much discloses what the book is about: 50 essential spices and herbs. The recipes I made from the book I was not in love with, however, I do use the book as a reference manual for spices. It helped me properly stock my kitchen, and kept me from running out to the grocery store every 10 minutes when I encounter a new recipe. Example: the new pizza sauce recipe that included fennel seed ? Yeah, I already had that herb stocked. Do you know what I'm talking about? When you're missing literally one spice and it's that one spice that makes the difference in the recipe? It's so annoying when you're trying new styles. The book helped me avoid this conundrum. Anyway, back to the point, I like reading notes about the history of the spice and its uses. I've also use this to stock my herb garden in the backyard. My husband enjoys the book, and I suspect that as my children become of age and help me more in the kitchen, which is a family tradition, they will enjoy the book as well.

This didn't teach me much I didn't know about the spices and how to use them and in what cultures around the world one will find each of them put to use.
Some I will never like or use, but I respect them all. This is a GOOD reference book and a good intro and explorational book. It will open the door to a lot of things most cooks, including some very good cooks, may never have considered.
It's worth putting in one's culinary library.

Okay, I've still to study it with more dedication. However, from skipping here to there for meals I found out I am completely dumb when its about what exactly the flavors are made of. It's like 'magic' like this global kitchen you group six spices and I can make a Cajun meal or ten spices and herbs now I've got Indian. I give myself one star when it comes to MY cooking and I describe it as lacking consistency and variety. REALLY, my brother can back me my cooking is MEH. Now its a bit better but I figure I keep practicing and start to measure instead of eye balling it. Now if your naturally good at cooking get this book anyway it's an encyclopedia of awesome! You'll be like Martha Stewart dropping facts. Meanwhile I can float by at 'good' or maybe next time I won't lightly burn things. Totally want to get a tablet so I can view it there and not on this laptop or I can get the book.

I don't like to cook, but as you already know, eating out and processed food is highly unhealthy. In order to eat healthier, it make more sense to cook from scratch as much as reasonably possible. This book provides plenty of information on what is a spice and what is an herb, which foods best to use with and which other spice / herbs to combine with. Very helpful for an inexperienced cook.

This is such an interesting informative book of herbs and spices I thoroughly recommend it. Would make a great gift to any aspiring young cook or very experienced one. I have lived in countries where so many of the spices etc are grown and still found lots of info that was useful. It is well written and the author gives several inviting recipes. I had downloaded the ebook onto my iPad but after reading it will most likely buy the actual book and keep in kitchen and review my herb and spice collection.
