I used to work at a gourmet coffee shop. No, not Starbucks or Gloria Jeans. One of those too-cool-for-school hipster coffee shops where we roast our own beans imported directly from whoknowswhere and make little flower and heart designs in lattes. Anyway, this cheap hunk of metal is just as good as the $50 devices we used. All it really has to do is:

1. Be heavy -- check
2. Be flat on the bottom -- yup
3. Fit in the cup (mine was a Breville) -- you betcha

Item was shipped quickly and packed properly. However, it arrived with a little chip in the edge of the tamping surface that dug a trail in the coffee when spinning the tamper. As I looked at that flaw, I could see a yellowish-color base material. The description states that this is solid stainless steel. Stainless is not magnetic; this thing is. It appears to be a thin plating (I suspect chrome) over a heavy base metal. That doesn't necessarily make it bad, but it is certainly not being represented accurately. That alone is enough to keep me from buying from this supplier again.

I'm not sure what "Unibody solid stainless steel construction", as advertised, is supposed to mean, but I don't believe the entire item is made of steel.

One thing that is not mentioned in any of the top reviews that I read was that the tamper is actually two parts; a head and a handle and they screw into each other.

The inside of the female screw port shows, to my eye, that there is a different sort of metal at the core of the product; you can even see a flake of the metal resting on the bottom of the port in my photo. Most likely it is a cheaper and softer metal used to add weight. I don't entirely know what is on the outside of the product, but I guess that it is stainless steel.

Nonetheless, the item has a nice hefty weight to it and even from looking inside the female screw port you can see a certain level of thickness that the outside steel retains; about a 1/4" would be my guestimate. I'm not sure if that is how thick the steel is over the entire product, and not just how it is at that part of the product, but so far I have not encountered any problems with it.

I was willing to pay the higher price ($10 more) for this product as opposed to one of the other stamps out there because I had read that the others had a thin coat of steel on the outside and the soft metal core could be exposed with a few mere nicks of the surface steel. I don't want to ingest metal flakes of any sort, so I thought it would be worth it to pay triple the price for a long-lasting quality item. I think that is what I have here, but I still need to confirm over time.

NOTE: at first I thought the reddish flaky metal pieces might have been rust, but it wouldn't make sense since I bought the product factory new and it is non-rusting stainless steel.

As other 1 star reviewers have noted, this Tamper is completely misrepresented. It's not one piece (mine was unscrewed in the box) and thus is NOT uni-body. It's also NOT solid stainless steel. As others have noted it's magnetic so they claim this is proof, but it's not. Some stainless is made with chrome instead of nickle and that stainless IS magnetic, but that's beside the point. It's not solid. You can actually plate stainless onto other metals if you plate copper first, and this has an obvious layer of copper (as well as copper pulled out with a Q-tip), but the final coating may be stainless or it may be chrome. Both use copper as a base plate so it's hard to tell what this is. This appears to be iron tamper, plated with copper, then plated with stainless or chrome. What it isn't is what it was described as and thus the one star. Still deciding if it's worth the hassle to send it back.

This tamper is great. The surface is high polished and the bottom is almost like a mirror. Very heavy, solid material. It fits perfectly in the filter cup of my KRUPS Espresso Bravo Plus, which has a 52 mm inner diameter.

1) It is solid, not hollow.
2) It is flat bottom, not concave (people actual debate the merits of flat vs. concave)
3) It has substantial weight to it (I did not measure it).
4) I measured the diameter with calipers, it is just shy of 51mm (50.98mm if I recall correctly).
5) Used for ~1 year now, NO rust. (I have never washed it, just wipe it down with a wet paper towel)

I paid $26 and it was branded V-tech (or something similar sounding) on this listing when I bought it. It now says generic and is priced closer to $17. The product listing is identical other than the branding.

fast delivery and great product. bought it for the De'Longhi EC155 portafilter and is a very close fit. Even better than the tamper that is fixed on the EC155.

The cheap plastic tamper that came with the popular Mr. Coffee pump espresso machine broke, so I looked around for a replacement.

It wasn't so easy. There are no specs provided by Mr. Coffee, and a lot of conflicting ideas about what is best from online user reviews of different tampers.

This one is the exact diameter of the original. It's very heavy. It's not too expensive. Shipping from China takes some time, but it arrived sooner than promised.

A great replacement if you need one, and, I'd say, a good upgrade, too.
