This book this book starts with a great introduction to the windows phones. It introduces Metro design language, hardware specifications, input patterns, the application lifecycle, out of the box services, live tiles, and the marketplace. By the time you are done with the introduction you have a solid understanding of the windows phone context.

The book continues with ten more chapters. They include Writing Your First Phone Application, XAML Overview, Controls, Designing for the Phone, Developing for the Phone, Phone Integration, Databases and Storage, Multitasking, Services, and The Marketplace.

The author has a really nice writing style which makes the book an easy cover to cover read. It will also make a nice reference.

There are a bunch of tables, screenshots, and diagrams that really help explain the topic at hand. The author does not go overboard with them like some books I have seen that use them for filler.

One of the things I like about the book is that the author does a great job of switching between Visual Studio and Expression Blend at appropriate time. Not too many authors do that and I wish it was done more often. If you are developing with XAML, Blend needs to be part of the toolkit you master.

Another thing I like is the author shows you us how to take advantage of built in features like the camera, email, making a call, media player, and search.

The book also covers the Silverlight for Windows Phone Toolkit controls including AutoCompleteBox, ContextMenu, DatePicker, TimePicker, ListPicker, LongListSelector, PerformanceProgressBar, ToggleSwitch, ExpanderView, PhoneTextBox, and WrapPanel.

In chapter 7 the book covers all the integration tasks that are included with Windows Phone 7.1.

I'm a web developer by trade, so Windows Phone 7 development is new to me.

I wanted a book that met the following criteria:
1) Provide a solid foundation of the core concepts
2) Focused on Silverlight, not XNA
3) Covers that latest version of the OS (7.5 as of this writing)

Overall, the author provided just what I was looking for. The core concepts were covered thoroughly and Silverlight received top billing. Occasionally, the author uses a term or description that I feel is beyond the introductory context of the book. I'm certainly not opposed to this approach as long as the explanation is equal to the topic.

Setting aside my small gripes, the easy going, conversational style of writing should appeal to many.

A recommended read for individuals wanting a comprehensive introduction to Windows Phone 7 development.

This book is wonderful. It is to the author's credit that this book is such an easy read, yet so full of useful information on the various aspects of Windows Phone programming. Anytime I had a question about something, I found the author addressed it shorty after. Reading the book in it's entirety gave me a good grasp on the scope of Windows Phone development and I will return to the book as a reference during my development because it mentions a lot of tips, caveats, & other details you need to know when developing for the phone.

I was looking for a book that spoke Geek-English so that I may grasp how to program the Windows Phone. This book does just that. It explains things in very well written terms. I have had several programming textbooks through school, Visual Basic was one, that was just horrible. For an intro class the boke was wrote geared for a person that had been programming for a few years.

Windows Phone programming is an area of interest to me as a mobile programmer, both as someone who has done Windows Mobile 6.x development and Android programming. I wanted to get started with a single resource that would not only give me a good overview the Windows Phone ecosystem but also quickly get started without too many details.

This book definitely met those needs. It has probably the best introduction that I have found where the author takes you through a quick introduction to Windows Phone. The chapter is a must read and covers the key areas for a developer so that by the time you begin the next chapters, you will you are ready.

The book gives good introduction to XAML, which I had not used before and a discussion of the appropriate tools. So you find Expression Blend and Visual Studio being used when it is the right tool for the task. The teaching experience of the author comes out throughout the book where necessary screenshots accompany the text.

The topics cover just about enough to determine if you need that functionality in your phone apps. Simple screen navigation, Phone Calls, Network Services, Background Tasks, Databases -- these topics are enough for anyone to begin writing serious Windows applications.

If you have to start with Windows Phone programming, give this book a shot.

I came to this book after dabbling with Windows Phone development. I have done some casual coding and the approach in this book was perfect to take my basic knowledge acquired through experimentation and fill in the blanks on the what, why, how of serious App development using Silverlight. The author, who runs his own training company and is widely published, takes you through the programming environment pointing out the importance of knowing how consumers interact with Windows Phone and how to avoid pitfalls that can derail your project.

The text might be a little intimidating for the non-pro coder, I'd recommend starting with Teach Yourself Windows 7 Phone Programming in 24 Hours as a first book. Once you have some fluency in coding for Windows Phone this text is a great intermediate course. An especially valuable section is a detailed overview of the App Marketplace submission process.

This is an in-depth look at all aspects of App development, from idea to monetization. The great idea is provided by you but this book gives you the roadmap to bringing it to life.
