One of my favorite features so far is that you can stand the new Fire up and still have it plugged in to power when you need it.
There are a lot more ads on this one than my previous one, but the books in my cloud came over just fine as did my music and apps. It must have an upgraded web browser (still Safari) because it hasn't wigged out on me yet.
I'm very pleased with the purchase. I did notice when I purchased the bundle that it came with a black Kindle, a cover of my choice and two screen protectors. I'm very satisfied.
The tablet has been running great so far. Don't expect to be able to load Google play store or other Android apps though. Truly being able to do that would require hacks or rooting that will void warranties and very easily break your tablet if you don't know what you're doing. Best Advice: look at the Amazon app store before buying. If they don't have a particular app that you can't live without then do not buy this tablet. Fire OS is not Android even though it is based on it.
The screen protector is great so far and you get 2 which is a plus.
Case is nice. I personally don't like the way it folds as a stand but it hasn't collapsed on me so it gets the job done.
The biggest issue I have with this tablet is I feel the base volume is too loud.
Also the volume buttons change depending on the screen orientation. That threw me for a loop at first. The 'top' button is always volume up even if the tablet does a 180 in landscape mode.
Overall very happy with this tablet & bundle.
I'm also disappointed that I cannot load Google Apps like the Play Store, Chrome, and Gmail on the device, despite the fact that the Fire it is Android based. While there is a web browser and email client on the Fire, I'd prefer to run Google provided applications for Google services. I have no reason to trust apps from other parties when accessing services from my Google account. Furthermore the fact that you have to constantly sign into your Google account to use the limited set of Google apps Amazon does provide is annoying when compared to a fully functional Android device. Finally in this area, it is also irritating that the Google apps that are provided do not show proper icons on the home screen.
Other than that it seems to work within expectations. Alexa is minimally functional with my Nest Thermostat, but that seems more a limitation of the Smart Home plug-in from Nest. If the Google Play Store were supported I could load the Nest App and be able to fully control the thermostat, including seeing the current setting, which isn't possible via Alexa.
As a reader it performs well and hopefully it will be more stable than the recent releases of the Android Kindle App. So far I haven't seen any of the recurring crashes my spouse and I both see with that app on our Android based tablets.
Speaker performance is well above average compared to all other tablets we've owned to date. You can actually hear these, surpassing the performance even of those on several laptops we've owned.Read more ›
