Now it is hard to find a product without functional defects; this hammer is no exception
The striking faces are ground as much as a quarter inch off square, like this \__/ with severe irregularities every which way on the faces. See the photos ::
Two photos show the hammer in a vice with one face square against a vice jaw:: The space between the jaw and the hammer face is the grind error.
If work is squarely struck this hammer will leave a half moon indention. It can also damage a chisel by a partial strike with the high side.
The lacquer coating is bubbled and damaged, even the stickers are askew .
Cosmetic damage would be no consequence as this is a hammer to be used. That is unless you want to give it as a gift. Or take pride in ownership of a fine tool.
With the the faces off badly, I can't fix the problem by grinding, as this would ruin the tempering:
And I cannot re-temper the tool with the nylon handle in place.
Looking at shelves in the big box stores, it is hard to find Estwing tools finished well.
This is Not the exception to the rule.
It is nice that they are hand finished. But they are badly hand finished
By the way, the "Sure Strike" series of Estwing Hammers made in Taiwan are better made with properly ground heads, and fewer defects, but do not have a full steel tang shaft, The hammer head is held on with brown epoxy with an uncertain life.
I am using a sure strike hammer Estwing MRF2LB Sure Strike 2-Pound Drilling Hammer until I can find a better example of this one.
I am sure Estwing will see the light and bring up the quality, once again
