This is a first time co-author read for me from these two authors. Davies and Dickson wrote and amazing second chance romance about two people that loved each desperately but let society dictate where that love would lead them. Lucky for them fate had other plans for them and lead them back to each other. This was a very heart warming story that shows that love can stand the test of time.
Etching Our Way mainly focuses on Tristan and Harmony. They fell in love in college, but Tristan rips her heart out in order to protect her from his father's wrath. Harmony is from "the wrong side of tracks" and Tristan's fathers wants him to marry someone to benefit the family business. They both move on with their lives, but 6 years later when Harmony catches her husband cheating on her she comes back home to her mom. Eventually Tristan and Harmony's path crosses again and their love blossoms anew into something beautiful.
Davies and Dickson's writing creates an amazing love story that is very heart warming and touches us deeply. Izzy and Clayton are the cutest children in the world and we all feel for them. We are instantly drawn into the story from page one and want to know more about these characters. However, this is supposed to be a story about Tristan and Harmony getting back together right? Davies and Dickson spend most of the book focusing on Tristan's inability to process the death of his wife. He does elude many times to the fact that he was never able to get over his love for Harmony, but he seemed to move on with his life. The story takes place almost 6 years after the death of his wife, but he is still unable to process what has happened. This is addressed in an unrealistic manner by the authors in which the two characters have one conversation towards the end of the book and he magically is alright. What the heck? It seems in reality that although Tristan loved Harmony very dearly in the past, he loved his wife differently and more deeply than he ever did her.
I know this sounds very negative, but I did enjoy the book thoroughly. The writing was amazing and I loved all of the characters. I just feel like they missed the mark with the delivery.
Abigail Davies & Danielle Dickson wrote an incredibly beautiful and poignant second chance romance. I laughed. I cried. I loved. There were so many life changing and emotional-wrenching moments for Harmony and Tristan that it's difficult to write a review without giving away pieces of their story. I want you to have the pleasure of experiencing their journey as I did, so I'm going to keep it vague.
The authors expertly conveyed each moment, emotion, and relationship to allow us to fully grasp every aspect of Tristan's and Harmony's lives. And the flashes into the past throughout the book were perfect and essential. My heart broke so many times over the circumstances and pain that Harmony and Tristan experienced. Their love and passion for one another was soul deep, but with all of the years and devastation between them, I wondered how they would ever be able to move through it all to find their way back to each other. At the same time, I felt like the drama and pain of the past were fated; Harmony and Tristan wouldn't be the same in the end without it. You'll understand once you read their story.
I felt like Tristan was stuck in the anger stage of grief for years because not only was he dealing with the loss of a loved one, but he was also still mourning the loss of his first love, Harmony. His volatility simmered just below the surface, and every unfavorable interaction quickly brought him to boiling. Fortunately, with his years of experience concealing his emotions, he was able to harness it before too much spilled over and burned those around him. That's not to say others weren't affected by his inability to cope with his losses. Tristan struggled greatly and lacked the ability to accept help or even recognize that he needed it. It wasn't until he was forced to face reality that he finally relented.
Harmony was such a special and beautiful woman. I absolutely adored everything about her. She was patient, understanding, loving, strong, and thoughtful. Tristan was lucky to have her back in his life in whatever capacity they were both willing to accept. I was pleased with how Harmony was able to shed the heartbreak from her past and grow into a new woman finally finding herself and rejuvenating her passion for life. It was also wonderful to witness Harmony and Tristan's new relationship develop allowing them to move on and let go of their shared past.
