Super bright 850nm illumination - works well with my FOSCAM FI8910W cameras... with one exception.

I bought two of these because I moved one of my cameras from inside the house to outside with the use of Focsam's Dome enclosure (http://www.amazon.com/Dome-Enclosure-Foscam-Indoor-Cameras/dp/B00BMVRNHE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1391973792&sr=8-1&keywords=foscam+dome+enclosure).

I had an interesting discovery regarding the FI8910W during the testing of this illuminator light. The problem with using the enclosure is that the illumination from the camera's built-in IR LEDs reflects off the dome making night vision impossible. This fact is well published. Also well published is how to turn on/off the camera's IR lights. Well, turning off the camera's IR lights also disables the IR-Cut; you lose the ability to see much at night, even with the brightest external illuminators. With the FI8910's IR turned off, the camera still sees a little of this illuminator's output, very very little... looks more like the output from a flashlight with about 10 seconds of remaining battery life.

Initially I was stunned and thought this to be a POS product (piece of s---). But after some Google searches, I found that I must leave this Foscam camera's IR functionality enabled and do one of two things:

1. Cover the camera's IR LEDs with black electrical tape or
2. Perform a hack to the camera which involves installing a resistor and a switch (search YouTube for "FI8910W HACK" by TPekoe. It is very informative).

Bottom-line is that once I disabled the FI8910W's built-in illumination with tape while leaving the IR turned on, I was able to see what this illuminator is capable of - and it is perfect for my needs.

I purchased two of these and liked the way they work. I mounted each on the side of trees about 60 and 80 yds from the house to highlight an area for observing coyotes at night. Works well for Sony Nightshot camera and NVRS scope. After a few rain showers, I noticed they were getting dimmer. The lens were fogging up and the water level inside had already filled up to the lower leds. To remove the water, I unscrewed the lens caps and used a hair drier to remove most of the moisture. The lens cap does have a large o-ring seal, but I think the water got in mostly through the wire access hole (not sealed) and around the lens inside mounting surface. I put silicon rubber sealant on all surfaces in hopes to avoid future water damage. The lights work well enough that I probably would buy more but would apply the silicon rubber treatment for outdoors use. I use a 12 volt power supply located inside my house. The long wire drops the voltage level to between 9 and 10 volts at the lights allowing it to operate well within the 9 to 12 volts range without overheating.

I hope the supplier removes the outdoor rating in the advertisement

For the price this can't be beat. I use it in conjunction with my TriVision NC-336PW and it is great. It lights up a large portion of my barn (it is installed inside the barn) which is 200 feet from my TriVision camera. Of course to the normal eye the barn appears dark inside, but anyone walking inside is completely illuminated and can be seen by my NV camera. I'm going to get a couple more of these to use with my other TriVision camera's. Great buy! (be sure to get the inexpensive power supply to go with it).

Well, I can tell you my first thoughts of this product were, WOW...pretty impressive for only 10 bucks.

But please keep in mind, this is my first night of trying these out.
According to many other reviews, the IR array will start failing soon, and quickly become useless.
I'm keeping an open mind, and will give these a fair chance.

How it looks, and how it's build quality is...
It's small/compact, it looks very well built, it has a nice & thin protective cover (a rubber or silicone of some type) over the impact resistant glass and around the front edge of the casing (aluminum or thick plastic of some kind?). The mounting bracket could have been made out of better/stronger material, it takes very little effort to bend. But all in all, the build looks solid and professional.

Now for how well it works...
I use a WiFi Dropcam Pro camera (multiple), and 1 that's set up inside my house, pointed out through a double pane window. Yes...I had to disable the built in IR illuminators, which was an easy task using some 3M electrical tape. Now, with this Dropcam Pro, I can still enable night vision, without getting a lens full of reflecting glare. I can also come close to seeing my entire front yard, with the exception of the far left, driveway, and mailbox. The second Etekcity Night Vision Illuminator, mounted just above the garage door, took care of lighting up the rest of the front yard. Excellent coverage for such a small IR unit.

Now with both mounted, powered up, and working properly, my entire front yard is lit up like day time, and I can also see across the street, and see my neighbors house and fence line. I mean these things are crazy bright, and worth every penny of the 10 bucks each!
