This handy portable straw can safely filter up to 1500 liters of water with three filtration stages, eliminating harmful contaminants including bacteria, heavy metal ions, chlorine, volatile organic compounds, organic, and insect contaminants. In the event of an emergency situation or any natural disaster, keep the Etekcity Personal Water Purifier on hand for immediate access to safe, drinkable water. There’s no water collection or water storage necessary. Simply immerse the straw in a body of unfiltered fresh water and take a sip!
Stage 1: Pre-Filter
The pre-filter attachment acts as your first line of defense when drinking from turbid water sources. Attaching the pre-filter to the Personal Water Purifier removes rust, silt, worms, and other large contaminants as you drink from your desired source.
Stage 2: Carbon Filter
The carbon filter near the base of the water purifier works to remove chlorine, heavy metal ions, and trihalomethanes (THMs), which are used to disinfect water or are disinfection by-products and are potential carcinogens.
Stage 3: 0.01 Micron Hollow Fiber UF Membrane
The Hollow Fiber UF Membrane filters particles as small as 0.01 microns. By capturing 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria, protozoa, mold, and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs), you’re left with clean drinking water to ensure your survival and safety.
Essential Survival Gear
Using the Etekcity Personal Water Purifier, you’ll be able to draw clean drinking water from any water source. Should you find yourself near a turbid water source, attach the included pre-filter with the extension tube to the purifier to drink from a safe distance. The 16-ounce water pouch can also be used to gather water to take with you on the go; the pouch can be clipped to your bag or utility belt for easy access. When you’re finished drinking, fill up the cleaning syringe with clean water to wash out your purifier. Not only will it keep your water purifier ready for the next drink, it will also help extend the lifetime of your purifier.
Packing the Personal Water Purifier in first aid kits or emergency preparedness kits ensures that you will always have a clean water source.
For Camping and Hiking
Take advantage of the water purifier’s lightweight build by bringing it with you on your next hiking or camping adventure. Keeping it on hand will allow you to access drinking water from nearby puddles, ponds, and streams.
For the Hunters & Fishers
Whether you’re on land or wading in the water, tracking down prey while on the hunt may take longer than you expect. The Personal Water Purifier allows you to hydrate as you go, so you won’t have to fumble around with bulky canteens and canisters.

In a nutshell:
Sure, it filters better than the Lifestraw. No doubt. I tested with manually (no viruses or bacterias mind you) contaminated water and inspected the result with a microscope. Couldn't fault it. The lifestraw let some stuff through, this one did not. Nada.
It's HARD to draw water from this. You might die of exhaustion before you get 100ml of water in your mouth. Plus, the water has to be prefiltered and very clear or you won't get any water at all through the filter! Even little pieces of ~0.5mm will block the filter flow.
So there's a few prefilters included, use them, or this wont work (that means you can use the straw about 5 times then you're out of filters by the way).
With clear water, you still need to suck on it and pressure the bottle to help to get a half-decent flow of water (which won't be fast, plan 5 full minutes to drink a small glass of water).
Then comes the cleaning. The tiny plunger is cool and works, but you'll have to use it about 10-15 times to properly clean a mildly dirty filter, while shaking the filter manually between the back flushes.
In comparison, the life straw flaws about as fast as unfiltered water, which is very comfortable.
if you don't need the virus filtration (which is also unverified, anyway), get the lifestraw. if you do or value the higher filtration, the personal water filter purifier might be good enough. Just don't expect to use it as easily. I'd take a survivor filter (incl. the pump activated) or other brands any day if you're going to use this often though, including the lifestraw+steripen (UV kills most viruses) combo which is pretty decent, light, and much faster.
Onto the bad. The little water pouch it comes with is terrible as a travel companion as it is difficult to open fully and due to external water pressures, cannot be fully inflated to fill the advertised volume. Sucking through the straw itself is also a very tiring and tedious process. My two cents is to find a separate squeeze bottle of better quality that you can screw onto the end to act as a filter. Otherwise, you're in for a tough time. Unless you're in dire circumstances where this is your only way to access a safe drinking source, I'd bite the bullet and spend a little more on a pump type or gravity type water filtration system.
TL;DR: Does as advertised but tiring to use due to density of filter. Peripherals also leave much to be desired. Pack away in a bug-out scenario, but otherwise get a proper filter.
This little kit comes with everything you need including a backwash syringe to clean it out, a longer hose (which I did not use yet) for hard to reach areas of water, and a bladder to hold water to carry with you, and the pre-filter with extra filters. The straw attaches right to the bladder so you can drink your filtered water from the bladder through the straw.
I am keeping mine in the box where it all fits nicely for now, but I will make a little bag with a draw string to hold all the pieces.
Note that they tell you it is good for one year from the first use of it, make sure you write that date on the straw so you are aware when to purchase a new one or that date is running close so you don't get sick. If you haven't used it you can store it indefinitely.
Now I need to purchase another one for my bug out bag. I am looking at their piezo camp stoves right now :-)
