I have used Woods Wireless Remote Electrical Outlets throughout my home in the past, but I could only find a set of a maximum of 3 Woods outlets on Amazon. Woods are a much more sleek and well designed product. I have one Etekcity Remote Outlet in use in the Master Bedroom behind the bed.
I needed 5 remote outlets in my Great Room to control LED lighting, as well as two lamps and so I decided to give the Etekcity 5 outlets a try.
When you plug your appliance into the Etekcity outlet, in this case a lamp, into the front of the Etekcity outlet, the Etekcity body will either cover the top wall outlet when plugged into the bottom of the wall outlet. Or, if you plug the Etekcity Outlet into the top wall outlet you may find it difficult to use the bottom wall outlet if you were to want to use the bottom outlet for something like a Vacuum Cleaner or any other appliance that has a large plug.
In the case where I needed to have two of the Etekcity outlets in the same location I had to use one of my better outlet strips that had wide spacing of the outlets because of the size of the Etekcity outlets.
Will they do the job, absolutely! Will they do the job better than a Woods product? For my application, no! But they are better than nothing.
- Really easy to set up. Takes less than 30 seconds to set up each one.
- Range on the remote controls is better than advertised (and they work without direct line-of-sight).
Even though these things work even better than expected, I'm knocking off one point for the two cons below (neither of which is a huge deal, just a little inconvenient):
- These remote control outlets are just a little too big, so if the other plug you are trying to fit in a shared wall outlet is anything other than just a simple plug, it won't fit.
- The batteries are a weird size. I'm not sure what they're actually called, but they're kind of half-length AAAs. Like I say, not a big deal, but not the kind of things you'd probably just have lying around when it comes time to replace the batteries.
- The remote control has a very basic design, and in the dark, it's hard to tell which is the top and which is the bottom. I've found that tying an elastic band (or a hair band) around the bottom (see photo) is handy for knowing which way is up when you're fumbling around in the dark.
UPDATED - 11/24 our second set the #4 outlet just died while plugged to a reading lamp. two attempts to get this fixed and still NO reply. can't give five stars when there is no back end support and reliability is in question.
UPDATED - 12/9 yet another outlet died last night. so after not even three months two of five are broken. seems to be zero quality control on these items. i wonder how many others have posted reviews positive reviews as i did right off the bat but then when the outlets started to fail they just didn't update their feedback? again i don't know not that i haven't tried to sans a modicum of success.

Here is what I don't like about them. They are fairly large. When you plug one in you can only plug a regular cable into the other outlet. You may not be able to plug in a larger cable or likely a power adapter (none of mine fit). If you want to control two items from the same electrical box you can't plug two in unless you use some sort of extension cord for each one. I have attached a picture so you can see how little room there is with one plugged in. If I need to buy more I would likely go with the Instapark ORC-T2R5 set which cost less and also look smaller. They also have the option of turning everything on or off with a single button.
Customer service is absolutely exceptional, they reached out to me the day I got the packaged and asked me if everything arrived correctly and on time. Kudos to these guys.
As for the the Buzz TV box, I've read you should turn off the power to it and not leave it on continuosly (just turning it off by the off button is not good enough , you need to unplug it. Well the second remote is with the tv remotes and we just press off to disconnect it from the power supply and don't need to unplug it anymore. we wanted the two remotes as they would be available in different locations. Also the one remote can turn off and on any of the other areas where the plugs have been installed. We are very pleased with the product. Units the 3-5 are avaiable for backup if anything goes wrong with 1 and 2. We had zero problems installing the batteries (which some people said they did - you just need to watch what you are doing - you don't do the square peg in the round hole approach). We also plugged the remote plugs into a surge protector power bars (one is upstairs and one is downstairs) - as several plugs are in each power bar and we just turn off the one item in the power bar eg. WiFi only or Buzz TV and not affect the other plug-ins.
These are great for elderly people - one remote can be by the bed to light up the way to the bathroom at night, and the other remote can be at the bottom of the stairs, ready to turn everything off on the way up to bed. One friend of mine doesn't have a 3-way light switch on his hall light -- he has to keep a flashlight to climb the stairs to bed. Now, he'll be able to put a lamp in the upstairs hall, and use a remote to light the way.
These units can also be used to turn on a living room lamp from the bedroom if a noise is heard in the middle of the night. This could ward off a car thief or someone trying to break into a neighbour's home (or your own). They can also be used to remotely shut down a computer centre, preventing you from having to reach under a desk for the switch on the power bar.
This remote control is very affordable with so many parts. I love the programability of the outlets. You can program all outlets to turn on or off with just one button. I also find 2 remote controls very useful. One near the bedroom before going to bed, one for the living room where all the lights are!
I only wish the outlets were smaller. When I insert them, they cover not just the top outlet (if any) but also neighbouring outlets from left and right (again if any). They are also very thick.
But overall I like them very much, so still 5 stars.
- functions well
- has separate on/off buttons so you are not confused if you are turning something on/off in another room (without visual feedback)
- programable units - can turn multiple things on/off with one button
- range on remotes are ridiculously amazing - i can turn all the christmas lights on inside the house from outside my house
- comes with batteries
- weird battery type is annoying
- unit is a bit bulky, may prevent you to use other outlet
The remote is preprogrammed for each outlet so just press the corresponding number on the remote to turn what you want to control on/off. Works behind couches or not in view.
Only wish is that they made various types included in the pack of having side plug-ins instead of face on, since the outlet increases the depth of the plug - so outlets behind the couch may need the couch to be pushed forwards a bit more.
