Overall this is an excellent product. The grip is nice, the display screen has a backlight and you can't beat the price.

A simple way to test the accuracy of this thermometer is to measure the temperature of a pot of boiling water. This will roughly give you a temperature of 212 F. Boiling water, in equilibrium (or the entire fluid being the same temperature) will maintain 212F no matter how quickly the water is evaporating. The reason this is a rough estimate is that the boiling temperature of water changes with salinity and altitude.

The thermometer I received was reading around 208-212 F. So how does this compare to the top end model? I am an engineer who provides safety related components to nuclear power plants. We use the $200+ model which is calibrated by a separate vendor. Our calibration standard is 1.5C which is 209.3F as our lower end tolerance. So this thermometer would NOT be suitable for qualifying safety related components for nuclear plants. Except you aren't trying to qualify safety related components.

In practice, these are used for taking a quick, general measurement of fluid temperature or identifying heat losses. I wouldn't expect many people to need to use these to get exact temperatures. I have used this at my home to identify what rooms are cooler then others, draughts around doors or windows and leaks in the HVAC system.

I would greatly recommend purchasing this over the higher end thermometers. Very solid product and definitely accurate.

I use it primarily to check pan temperatures when I am frying food. I have also used it to check air conditioning. Lower the set point of your AC so it will run for a while and temperatures become stable, perhaps 5 minutes. Check the temperature of the grille where the air leaves the room a.k.a. return air. Check the temperature of the cold air grill where the cool air returns to the room. The temperature difference between the two is how well the AC works, assuming that you have recently changed the filters and the air flow is correct. I get a 20 deg difference in my house but your mileage may vary. (by the way, that grill thingey that the air comes out of is called an anemostat.)

Easy to use, fast, pretty accurate. My neighbor paid twice as much for a Ryobi thermometer which consistently reads two degrees (F) higher. I don't know which is right. Two degrees is close enough for my purposes. I bought this as a toy, thinking it would be fun and perhaps useful. I thought I would use it for measuring machinery temps, AC output, etc. It turns out to be really handy in the kitchen. My oven thermometer takes several minutes to stabilize. Now I don't have to wait. I don't have to call with a slow responding, messy candy thermometer. I don't have to guess if the skillet or oil is hot enough. Just point and click and I have the answer.

It helps to understand how it works. The sensor measures infrared radiation from the are at which you point it. It works best at a distance of about a foot. It reads a one inch diameter spot at that distance. If you point it at an object twelve feet away it will read a one for diameter spot. If you're interested in the temperature of a two inch diameter heat source your reading will be skewed be the surrounding background at that distance. You would need to get within two feet of a two inch heat source to get an accurate measurement. The laser target is misleading because the light spot doesn't spread. Once you understand the implications of the 12:1 ratio of distance to target size you can get quite accurate measurements.

For less than $20 this is a great buy.

I wouldn't avoid this product because people say that the accuracy is off because they boiled water and it was off by a few degrees on their pot of boiling water. If you boil water at sea level, it should be 212 F. If you are higher than ocean level, the temp that water boils at decreases. If you point this device straight down at the water, you're trying to go through stream, which cools off extremely fast from 212, so this device could be detecting the temp of steam. I'm just observing that there could be more than the accuracy of the device causing the error in readings I've read in other reviews.

I've loved this device. I use it mostly cooking. Just to double check oil before I put food in that it actually is 350 and not 550. I've had no problems. I would buy another if anything happened.

I bought this to use on my wood burning stove so I could be sure it was burning at a good temp (between 400F and 600F). I just realized I've had it for almost two years and I've never had to change the battery. It works better if you position it a foot or two from what you're trying to read the temp of, rather than farther away. Think of it like a cone in front of the gun, the farther you are from the surface you're measuring, the wider the area it is going to take the temperature of. I point it at the top of my stove to take a reading. It's plenty accurate for what I'm using it for, but I wouldn't expect to point it at someone's forehead and get a medically accurate temp. If you want something like that you'll be paying a lot more money. It also can't really be used on reflective surfaces, so don't try using it on glass, as the beam will just bounce off and give you a reading of who knows what.
