If you bake "gravimetrically", you add flour and dry ingredients by weight, taring your scale between ingredients (tare = reset scale to 0.) I watched a friend of mine baking in Germany and she'd add the flour, tare the scale by hitting the TARE button, then add sugar, etc. It's an easier way to measure butter and fats, and it's really faster than measuring out cups by volume. And it's more accurate. So a scale that lets you put a bowl on it AND see the grams or ounces is very useful. Of course, it's great for dieters, because measuring your food is key to knowing what you eat. I never, NEVER make pasta without weighing it out first.
The scale is sleek and pretty. The right side on-off-tare button is a bit twitch (hence, the one star is taken away.) I had to only LIGHTLY touch it to turn off the scale. If you press it too long, it goes right back to the on setting.
The scale uses 2 AAA batteries, which is great because it's easier to keep those around than the coin batteries, which are more expensive and I always seem to be out of at home.
This is also really a great scale for pasta, especially elbows, medium shells and rigatoni. If you eat measured amounts of pasta so you don't overeat, you can quickly weigh out 2 oz (standard serving) in the bowl and dump it right into the boiling water.
Once I began using it, I saw that for my daily measurements of small amounts of food, I don't even need the meauring bowl. This scale has a tare function, which means you can press a button and the scale weight will go to zero even though you have the bowl or another item on the scale, so it is easier to simply place my dog's food bowl on the scale and weigh each ingredient separately into that bowl. I find the measuring bowl to be very helpful when I am using the scale for baking, or to measure larger amounts of food. It is also handy on its own as a bowl for salads or other foods.
You have the choice of measuring in grams or ounces. The display screen is easy to read and illuminates for easy viewing. The only improvement I would make is to keep the backlight on the screen on as long as you had the scale on, only turning off when the scale is turned off.
If you have any dogs with a fear of beeping smoke detectors, put them away.
So, how is this scale imprecise? It does not do tenths of a gram. See the attached pictures.
I happen to have some British coins and I decided to weigh them. According to The Royal Mint, a 20 pence coin weighs 5.0g, a 50 pence coin weighs 8.0g, and a one pound coin weighs 9.5g. Sure enough, the 20 pence and the 50 pence coins pass the test, but the one pound (in the last picture) does not. The scale rounds its weight off to a solid 9g.
The solution would be to just assume all weight is off by at at least 0.5g.
Regarding the noise, I mean the beep when turning it on; there is no way to disable it. Turning this scale on sends one of my dogs into a frenzy.
It measures 1 gram increments and goes up to 5 kg. It also comes with calibrating weight. Since the bawl is removable (which I really like) it is very easy to wash and clean it.
