Before starting this book, it is necessary to have read the previous two books in the series. Unlike a lot of other series, you can’t pick this book up and find out enough about the previous story to continue along. There is no information as to what has happened before in the other books and the reader is dropped right into the story where book two left off. It may also help to read the books close together because, for me, I read them a fair amount apart and completely forgot what was happening in the story. Since there is no information given about the other books, it does become fairly confusing as to some of the story specifics.
Ethereal Entanglements is geared towards young adults and perhaps pre-teen readers who are a bit stronger with their reading skills. As in the previous books, Ms. French has carried on with the fantastic fantasy world of the Spirit Knights and she has created strong characters that represent both the good and evil in the world. Clare is a well written teenage girl who has had a lot of heart break in the past and is searching for a way to fit in and belong to a family. She’s well rounded and realistically written in regard to the emotions of a girl her age. The other characters are just as fleshed out, including the newly discovered evil who I won’t mention so has not to give anything away.
I love Ms. French’s style of writing and believe that this series will appeal to young readers who have an interest in a fantasy world full of knights, witches, and dragons. The ending was sad but as there is another book to come in the series I’m hoping for a happier resolution to the situation. This series is entertaining and full of action as well as being fairly easy to read for young adults. I look forward to reading the fourth and final instalment in the Spirit Knight series.
I read this on my ereader and it formatted well. I love the beautiful cover and it definitely draws the eye.
It's hard not to get invested in the characters. Claire is such a down-to-earth girl who just happens to be from an important blood line in the Spirit Knights world. It's the classic storyline of normal girl finds out there's something not so normal about her, but the entire fantasy world this author has created is truly unique and extremely intriguing. Claire is the type of girl you can root for because you believe immediately that she's one of the good guys. It's believable from how the author writes her character. And, it makes her character much more real to see how Claire is constantly battling her nerves, her sense of duty, and all of the normal worries of a girl her age, like her relationship with Drew and the very trying and emotion-laden relationships with Justin and Marie as her adoptive parents. You believe the emotions that she's going through along the way. Like in the tunnel when the ghosts start coming out of the floor at her and frighten her because she can't kill them. She's battling her emotions and fears and worries against the traits she's told she should possess and show at all times as a knight. It makes her character very relatable.
It's also very easy to get sucked into the story and to feel very invested in the characters and to want to keep reading to find out how all of the characters fare by the end of the book. The addition of the sprites which often take animal form makes the story and the struggles the knights are facing that much more compelling and nail-biting. You care about how Enion and Mutt are going to get through battles because they can talk. Their characters come so alive with that ability which was a really nice fantasy element of the story that I really enjoyed.
The ending sets up the next story very well. Not only is it very clear where the next story seems to be heading, you feel this urgency to read the next one because of how this story ends. You don't really want this to be the ending. I couldn't begin to imagine exactly how things would all end up working out in the end, if they would/could in this series, but this book's ending made me very interested to keep going. There were a lot of interesting twists and turns in this book which caught me off guard in a good way and kept me reading for long stretches at a time. I think that's exactly what a good book does to you. And, the writing flowed so effortlessly. It was easy to picture everything along the way. Really well-written. I expect everything from this author would be just as well done and creative.
Oh and make note there is another book in the series! I say this because the ending will make you pull your hair out! If this had been the last book it would have been a series killer because the cliffhanger makes you wonder why the author would do this to you! I personally would wait to read this one until the fourth book is already out so that I could jump right into the next one if possible. This is not the kind of cliffhanger you wait months and months to continue later. This is the kind of series. you start book one and stay on the couch with tea until you are finished the entire thing. You know a series is good when its one you should binge read.
if obvious girl power and fantasy are your thing than read read read!
