I've been looking for a portable bluetooth speaker for quite a while now, years actually. I was hoping to find a bluetooth boombox of sorts, but most of the devices out there are variations of the jambox. While the jambox has rave reviews, it had a few things about I wasn't crazy about (1) lithium battery that's not replaceable, (2) it was small and tended to sound drowned out outdoors.

(1) - Battery - this one uses 6 AA batteries. That's a huge deal in my book, maybe not for everyone, but it is for me. I'm the type of person that always forgets to have things plugged in and charged and so they're dead when I really want to use them. Especially a niche device like a bluetooth speaker. I love the idea that for a coule of bucks, I can walk into any drugstore and my speakers will be fully charged. I actually have a huge supply of AA's in my house, so this is never a problem. My device is still too new for me to comment on battery life, but if it's anywhere near rated, I'll be totally fine.

If you're checking out this one, you're probably aware of the solar equivalent. Personally, I didn't think solar was worth an extra $40. Plus, you have the problem that it's also Lithium based and so it'll more than likely be dead when you want to use it most. Plus, I read that the solar panel doesn't work that well indoors. Outdoors yes, but not indoors. I'd rather save my money and AA is what I always prefer for power source.

(2) - Sound - this was my big worry. I actually have a cheap ipod boombox I got from bestbuy and put a bluetooth receiver into it, that's what I've been using. It's ok, but kinda cheap sounding and cheap quality. The Rukus is anything but. The sound was booming!!

Bang for the buck, I can't imagine a better lightweight compact portable speaker. 14 watts of power. Compare that to comparably priced bluetooth speakers, e.g., Jawbone Jambox- 8 watts; Acoustic Research AWSBT1- 5 watts; and Creative D100- 4 watts.

As far as sound quality goes, it's great. Plenty of clarity and volume, and Eton did a good job of tuning the enclosure for bass (which is why the unit looks like two bass tubes connected together).

Because it has bluetooth ability and is easily portable due to the large handle built into the unit, I often carry it around the house with me while doing various tasks.

The unit takes six (6) AA batteries. Lithium is best, but you can also use alkaline or rechargeables.
Some recommendations: (1) if you're using battery power, use the 3.5mm input on the back when possible, because bluetooth connectivity consumes extra power. Your batteries will last longer; (2) if you have an outlet handy, PLUG IT IN with the included AC adapter. It seems that the Rukus has a power management system which decreases the maximum sound level available on mere battery power. If you plug it in, you'll get higher volume levels.

Ok here is the bottom line on this speaker. It is by far the best speaker out there under $50. In fact under $50 it is a steal. I have a ton of bluetooth speakers including the Big Jambox, Bose Soundlink Mini, TDK Soundcube, Mini Jambox, Eton Rugged Rukus, Altec Lansing In Motion Air & IM 810 (my favorite, not bluetooth) and an Ion Clipster. I have had a Soundfreaq Soundkick, JBL Charge, JBL Flip and others. I think this qualifies me to make a judgement here. The two best speakers FOR THE MONEY are this speaker and the Ion Clipster. They both put out incredible sound for what you pay and what they are. So here is the skinny after the comparisons. This speaker holds its own against all of the above with the exception of the IM810 and TDK Soundcube. It has excellent overall sound quality. Here are some facts about these speakers. They ALL sound good. Hearing this speaker at this price point makes the Bose and BIg Jambox appear seriously overpriced because though it may not sound quite as good it is in the running and that says a lot. Contrary to what people have said about the volume, the volume is more than adequate for what it is. Is it going to blow out a party? No. For that your going to need something bigger. Come on people rate it for what it is. For what it is the sound quality and volume are excellent. I guarantee you will not find a better speaker for this price point anywhere. Are there better speakers? Of course, if you want to pay the money. The Rukus has comparable volume to the Soundlink Mini (the Mini is just a little louder, not much). The Mini, however, sounds a little distorted at full volume the Rukus did not. It cannot match the volume of Altec or the Big Jambox. I would rank the sound quality close to all three but not quite as good though it is a matter of taste.Read more ›

Sound is alright, Bluetooth connection is very useful and the inclusion of the adapter is great also so you don't have to use batteries. I bought it to listen to music with my friends on the go. It serves its purpose well if you have a bluetooth device and has so far survived on a single 4 AA batteries. For the price, this is a great buy. Doesn't seem like the best plastic though, I bet it would break if fell on the ground.
