The Eton Sound 100 AM/FM Radio brings you a classic musical companion with a stylish new twist. Eton has updated the retro glamour of radios past with swooping, curved lines, and today's in-demand, bold colors so that this old-school music box will add a touch of flair to any modern decor.
The Eton Sound 100 radio packs a wallop that makes it perfect for both home and office use. This unit covers the AM frequencies from 520 to 1710 KHz in 10 KHz increments, and the FM RDS frequencies from 87.50 to 108.00 KHz in 0.05 KHz increments. The ES 100 radio features five AM and five FM memory preset station assignments so you can quickly jump to your 10 favorite stations, an encoder volume control, and manual scan tuning. This radio also features an auto station function that locates and locks on to the strongest station signal, as well as an auto tune function that provides a programmed list of services.
The stylish ES 100 utilizes a high-sensitivity, digital PLL tuner for excellent AM/FM reception and sensitivity, and a built-in LCD display with a 2.4 x 0.98 inches (W x H) viewing area that is gently illuminated so it won't keep you awake, with a blue back light, black characters, and a two-line display that indicates time, station, alarm, band and presets. The clock on this radio is in 12-hour format, lets you select between radio and buzzer alarms, and provides you with a sleep timer and snooze function. And for the ultimate in convenience, this handy little unit even lets you operate it via an included infrared remote control.
This radio has built-in, 3.5-millimeter auxiliary line-in and audio line-out jacks for connecting an MP3 or CD player, and/or a set of headphones or additional speakers, as well as an AC power jack for connecting the included AC power adapter. The ES 100 utilizes an external aerial connection socket, a single-channel amplifier, and a three-inch, full-range, magnetically-shielded, high-fidelity front-firing mono speaker that is capable of producing incredibly powerful, distortion-free room-filling sound. The FM antenna is a chrome-plated telescoping aerial with a 360-degree swivel and rotation, while the AM antenna is a built-in loop. This radio has rubber feet on the bottom to prevent surface scratches, and includes a battery back-up that stores real time during a power failure and requires two AA batteries (not included). This Eton Sound 100 AM/FM radio comes in silver, weighs 2.82 pounds, measures 8.27 x 4.53 x 5.1 inches (W x H x D), and is backed by a manufacturer's one-year warranty.

I am a fan of some of eton's portables, which I have found to be serious radios, but I am at a loss to understand how a unit with this discontinued non-docking Sound 100's manifest poverty of features could command a $150 MSRP, which seems to me to be at least three times too high by any objective standard. The five memory presets per band are inadequate, as is the lack of indicators (even for MUTE) on the bright but unevenly-illuminated readout, the difficulty in manual tuning or the complete absence of tone/EQ adjustment in a radio with such exaggerated bass.
The sound and tuner performance are adequate, but nothing exceptional.
[I've since discovered that changing stations with the remote frequently resets the current station's memory number to that of the desired station's; if you try to switch from station E with memory setting 5 to station D with memory setting 4, Station E will remain on and have both memory settings 5 AND 4. VERY annoying! Not only is the memory function on this radio minimal to begin with, it doesn't even work reliably. This item goes back today!]
Later: After complaining about receiving an obviously used unit with memory/remote problems, Amazon shipped me a second unit, this one multiply opened and resealed with at least three (3) layers of tape with the same memory/remote problems -- which I assume are just endemic to the unit. Reception is much better on this example, however.
These are NOT new units but returns or refurbs of inconsistent quality.
Reception: I wanted this radio to listen to baseball games in my studio. I live in a sort of valley where reception is difficult. The radio can bring in the station I want, but not without a little static. It's possible of course that I could fine-tune it, but that would mean reading the manual... ok, I'll do that eventually.
Sound: I haven't listened to music on it, just the baseball games, and the sound is good. Not tinny. But not enough better than the Sony shower radio I was using in the interim between the old radio dying and this one coming in the mail.
I got the red one because Amazon was selling it for $50 less than the black one. If you want one, try to find it for around $100 or less - it's not worth more than that.
The build quality of the radio feels cheap, but it's light and has great sound with little distortion when the volume is cranked up. Another good thing is that the AC adapter that comes with the radio has a very long cord which allows the radio a good range from the outlet.
My only real problem with this radio is the extremely bright backlight for the LCD. My solution was to put electrical tape over the plastic flap that guards the LCD from scratches during shipping. When I'm ready for bed I just put the flap with the electrical tape back on. It would be much better to have a switch for the light.
Not sure WHY? it's so hard to find a radio with a remote anymore??? but after much searching I like this one well enough on Amazon and it was Prime too - hard to beat that. I like the digital tuning, but to be honest...I only have my one favorite Christian radio station on...and just turn the unit on and off and adjust the sound as needed. Works great for that.
