Product Description

The FRX3 is a solar and hand turbine powered AM, FM, weather radio with alarm clock. There is a built-in USB smart phone charger that allows a 30 second emergency phone call with one minute of cranking. To listen to personal tunes, use the AUX-input to play an external MP3 player. You’ll never be left in the dark thanks to the LED flashlight and glow-in-the-dark locater around the rim of the solar panel.

FRX3

Hand Turbine AM/FM/NOAA weather ALERT radio with USB smart phone charger and LED flashlight

Eton FRX3

Keep your household prepared with the FRX3. The rechargeable FRX3 is a preparedness radio with AM/FM, all seven NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) weather band stations and the "Alert" system. When the "Alert" function is on, the radio will automatically broadcast emergency weather alerts for your area such as hurricanes, tornadoes and severe storms. Set the solar panel in the sun or spin the hand turbine for one minute to get 10-15 minutes of radio and flashlight use. There are also AAA battery and DC power alternatives (mini-USB included).

The FRX3 also serves as a renewable power source for your other critical devices because of its USB smart phone charger. Simply plug in your phone into the USB port and power will automatically "dump charge" to your phone, just like plugging into the wall. This radio has a glow-in-the-dark locater so you can find it easily at night plus a LED flashlight and red flashing beacon for emergencies. If you want more than just the radio, there's an AUX-input to play your own tunes and a headphone output for individual listening.

Eton FRX3
Solar Panel

There are many products out there that have a USB cell phone charger, but most don't provide weather alerts and let you listen to your own music like the FRX3.

Just sit back and let the sun do the work with the integrated solar panel. Plus, surrounding the panel is a long lasting glow-in-the-dark bezel that will help you find your FRX3 in the dark.

I received the FRX3 as a 2012 Christmas gift. Mine is the American Red Cross edition in red and black, which other than a small Red Cross logo is apparently the same as the other versions of the radio.

The radio works as advertised: it picks up AM/FM/WX band broadcasts, the hand-crank dynamo does indeed power the radio, the blinking red light does indeed blink, and it has an emergency alert capability. For most people, I suspect, that completely fulfills their initial desires in an emergency-band radio.

The downside, however, is a significant one, and you may only realize the unit has this downside if you've owned an emergency alert WX radio in the past: the alert function is not well designed.

First of all, the emergency alert capability is not covered in the small manual that ships with the radio. I had to email customer service for help, which resulted in a reasonably prompt response from a knowledgeable individual. Can't fault them there. But for something that is sold as an emergency alert radio, I was really surprised to see there was no coverage in the manual of this functionality whatsoever.

You see, it's supposed to work like this: if the local NOAA weather office detects severe weather moving into your area, they broadcast a special alert tone (really, a series of computer-modulated tones) designed to "wake up" any alert-capable radio receivers running within their broadcast area. Typically, such receivers, upon receipt of this signal, sound a loud siren, after which the radio automatically switches on. Anyone in the room with the radio can then hear the specifics of the emergency, such as a severe storm warning, flood warning, civil emergency (think terrorism), etc., and take the appropriate action.

We bought this unit hoping to be able to charge an iphone 4 and a droid 4 during a power outage. Our tests showed that after completely charging the unit's rechargeable battery via usb connection to a computer, dump charging the droid 4 recharged the phone only 10%. That's better than a dead phone. As the droid 4 shows charge in 10% increments it may have been more. We'll try it with the iphone and report back. The dump charge depleted the radio's battery in under 5 minutes.

As for recharging a phone using the crank, with the iphone 4, 3 minutes of cranking produced a 1% charge, so realistically you're not going to completely recharge your iphone 4 using the crank but you can generate enough power to make essential calls. Again the droid 4 shows its charge in 10% increments so we assume we would have to crank for 30 minutes to show an increase of 10%, if we can assume charging time is the same for the two phones. If you're on your own it may be a challenge to make calls during recharging using the crank - put it on speaker maybe after you've generated enough power to initiate a call?

Unlike most other reviews here we weren't too concerned about the radio though brief testing seemed to show it works well.

For the price then we are satisfied that we will be able to make emergency calls though we won't be cranking this thing for 5 hours trying to reach a 100% charge. If you were under the impression that this device would do that easily then sorry to dash your hopes. There are battery packs made expressly for this purpose that will give you 2-3 100% recharges, such as the New Trent IMP70D

What a great little unit this has turned out to be. It is not a small or as light weight as I was hoping but what it lacks there it makes up for in function. This radio cab be used with the hand crank, alkaline batteries, rechargeable batteries (included), built in solar charger, or plugged in via USB. Lots and lots of power options. I have tried the radio in all power modes and it works great. Takes about 2 hours to charge the built in batteries on the USB and a little less than 10 hours in the direct fall sunlight here in Salt Lake City, Utah. About a minute on the hand crank gave me about 7 or 8 minutes of radio life. To top it all off there is a nifty little LED flashlight built in as well. Digital tuner works well and I can pick up AM and FM signals easily inside a concrete building with few windows and the sound quality is better than I hoped for out of little speakers. The unit can be used to charge a phone or other device via USB. I haven't tried this yet but I would guess it takes a bit of cranking to charge a phone! There is also an aux input and a headphone jack. It has turned out to be a solid unit that has taken a month's worth of jostling in my 72 hour kit that rides in the trunk of my car every day. It feel substantial and like it will take some abuse. The only things I can fault this unit on is that it is not completely waterproof (not a big deal to me, but to some), it is a bit larger and heavier than I had hoped and I would have liked to have seen some sort of protective cover over the solar cells rather than just the clear plastic. So other than taking up a bit more room than I would have liked this is a great unit!
