Product Description
The fifth main installment of the long-running Etrian Odyssey series is finally arriving! Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth chronicles the quest of a new adventurer as he or she attempts to reach the top of the towering Yggdrasil Tree. For it is said that whoever braves the dangers of the dreaded Yggdrasil Labyrinth and reaches the summit will have their greatest wish fulfilled…
Starting with the creation of your party to exploring the uncharted labyrinth of the Yggdrasil Tree, Beyond the Myth is all about choosing how your own adventure unfolds. Test your survival skills by wisely navigating the winding floors of Yggdrasil, using shrewd tactics when battling gruesome beasts, making the right decisions during various “scenarios,” and more.
It wouldn’t be an Etrian Odyssey game without the life-or-death need to map your progress. For those new to the series, the bottom screen of the 3DS displays a top-down, tile-based map that must be filled out while dungeon crawling. Players can use the map to mark the locations of treasures, doors, enemies, environmental obstructions, and other important landmarks.
There’s a reason why no one has ever reached the top of Yggdrasil. Dangerous creatures and utterly terrifying FOEs—high-level mini-bosses, for you newcomers—roam the labyrinth on every floor, so prepare to test your mettle with challenging turn-based battles. You’ll need the right team to unleash Union Attacks and level the playing field!

They've put together what should have been better creature combinations. It is smarter than the original in that light, but there are certain character combinations which are far more broken than any other Etrian Odyssey prior to this. In part, it is once you figure out these character combinations that the game becomes a piece of cake. If you don't optimize, it may be harder (I optimized, so I don't know exactly).
The biggest aggravation are the cheap tricks (such as the surprise enemy ambushes which are unavoidable on some levels, which may kill you on the first time you encounter them, but after that you can basically walk over them as you know they are coming).
The game itself took me around 2 hours per level, so expect to play around 50-60 hours if you are like me. At the end of each stratum expect to fight a large boss, of only which the second stratum offered me a pretty large challenge and killed me the first go around (otherwise, it's the surprise encounters that took me out far more than the bosses). The bosses are typically a little harder the the FOEs that wander around the levels, so if you can take them out (which you should be able to do easily by the end of each stratum) you should be able to take out the bosses. Taking out most of the bosses require you to bind them (but there is an overpowered union skill which basically lets you do this easily) and from there on out, are kind of boring encounters as well.
Overall, I just couldn't get over the boredom I felt as I played the game. I wanted to love it (As other reviewers obviously have) but I just couldn't get into it. The levels just did not inspire me like some of the other games unless it was an occasional annoyance.
I think a lot of it was, as I said, because even on the harder difficulty (and there is only two) it was pretty easy and wasn't really all that exciting for me. I think it may not be that way for everyone (I've played every EO that's come out in the US, so part of it could also be experience in what to expect). If this is your first EO it may be absolutely brutal on the player. I'd probably suggest the first one (or try Etrian Odyssey Untold which is a remake for the first one for the 3ds and has a storyline tossed in on top of the original dungeons) before this one. The enemies won't be quite as optimized to take advantage of each one's strength, and I found the level design on those far more interesting than this.
The story is probably about as strong as the first Etrian Odyssey, and as much depth. It doesn't have as much depth as some of the more recent EO's in regards to it's story or mystery of the dungeon. Things don't really even start to pick up in regards to any story line until the third Stratum. However, many players are playing EO V not for the story, but for a roguelike type dungeon. I did find the ending portion of the storyline pretty interesting. I think it's slower at the start, but more interesting overall than what you found in any of the EO's at the end of it (except of course, the Untold Storylines). I'll not post big spoilers, but a minor spoiler on it. The story incorporates a sort of sci-fi type storyline near the end, which expands upon the entirety of the EO universe to this point.
New innovations in this EO would be as follows.
A little character customization, more so than those that came before. You have different races which each can choose from two classes. Later on, you'll be able to access what they call a master skill list at which point each class branches into a choice of two master classes each (so each race ultimately has 4 classes to choose from). In addition, each race has racial skills which you can select. Many of the racial skills only require one skill point, though we are back to having 10 point class skills in general. You also have the union skills, where characters can combine to do powerful attacks or other abilities.
You have food which you can gather in the labyrinth which are non-consumable outside of battle. There are various points around the dungeon that you can start fires and cook food. As the game progresses you can occasionally find various recipes to cook different sorts of recipes. This is also another area which makes the game easier as food is abundant and when you are outside of battle you can use it to regenerate health and TP regularly.
I was looking forward to this game in a massive way, and though it was fun at some parts, the best description for me that I could give it was that it was sort of boring, which means a slight disappointment for me.
It is okay for those who enjoy the Etrian Odyssey series in general, and they may find fun with it. It does consume more time than some other games (as I said, if you are like me it will take you around 50-60 hours) but overall, I just never felt the enthusiasm or excitement that I felt when I played the other EO that have come previously.
Pros:
-Updated map system with plenty of colors, new customization (like the ability to move map symbols around)
-Has a Basic and Advanced mode. I've only played the Advanced mode, but it's definitely very challenging.
-The soundtrack is beautiful, with the integration of more jazzy tunes than other games in the series, and prominent use of the saxophone. It's very catchy and pleasant to listen to.
-Updated forging system, where instead of finding and collecting forge hammers, you strengthen weapons using materials and/or ingots.
-Interesting quests
-Lots of different events scattered throughout the stratum, which can have a variety of good or bad effects depending on what you choose, and you can get experience from these events. There are more than in previous games, and highlight player choice more as well.
-Updated character design system-- you can change hair color, skin color, eye color, and even voices. There's also alternate character portraits for every character, plus some "general portraits" for each race. There is a LOT of options, which is really fun.
-New skill system which may take some getting used to, but has base and race skills. Later in the game, you can unlock master titles, which allow you to get advanced skills. There are two titles/specializations for each class, which leads to even more party customizability.
-Battle system has 3 rows, where the 3rd and frontmost row is used for various summons depending on the class using them (and if you have that class in your party).
Cons:
-No overworld like in Etrian Odyssey 3 and 4, which I was a bit disappointed about.
-Single dungeon with multiple strata, and like the previous con, much like the older games.I enjoyed Etrian Odyssey IV's inclusion of the mini-dungeons, but that was integrated into the overworld, which this game doesn't have. I will say that this game does that on purpose since the intention was to be a throwback to older RPG's while adding new features.
-More fanservice-y in certain character designs, which is a bit uncomfortable at times (in my opinion).
-Voices can get annoying when investing skill points-- they repeat the same line over and over again. Thankfully there's an option to play without them.
-Forging system sadly takes away the ability to add effects to weapons like poison or STR (strength)
-Some enemies are noticeably tougher than others. This didn't bother me too terribly much, but you may need to grind for a specific enemy in advanced mode (unless you're super skilled at this game, of course). Essentially, Advanced mode can sometimes feel merciless.
Even though there's quite a few cons on this list, for me the pros outweigh the cons-- I find this game to be a ton of fun. I wanted to provide my personal frustrations for the game, however, just in case they're truly a deal breaker for some.
My only complaint/concern is the strong language. EO games tend to have a bit of swearing here and there; that's nothing new. But usually it's more "softcore" words like h*** and da**. However, this one used the word sh** 6 or 7 times before I'd even reached the end of the first Stratum. What's next, the f-bomb? Admittedly, I make a point to talk to every NPC after reaching each floor (their dialogue changes every time you reach a new one, btw), complete every quest, and participate in every Labyrinth event. If you're not as much of a completionist as I am, you may not see nearly as many instances of this, but be aware that this is the case.
Honestly, as much of a fan as I am of this franchise, I would have thought twice about buying it if I'd known about the language. And if you're considering getting the game as a gift for someone, PLEASE bear this in mind when determining if it's suitable for them. I hope this is not an indication of the direction they're thinking about going. They have solid enough stories and character interactions without inserting gratuitous language :-(

Muchas gracias.
Good game and good puzzles. I guess this is what DnD was supposed to be like.
Classes are great but often too restricted. You need 2 tanks or a tank and a healer or a tank and a debuffer.
I found that the Rover was the best healer and the fencer was the best tank but used a Dragoon to offtank against AOE/magic attacks.
You definitely need a warlock for the free levitation though.
