From the Manufacturer

Etymotic mc2 Headset + Earphones

Made for Windows Phone Made for Blackberry Made for Android

Etymotic makes the world's most accurate noise-isolating headsets in all categories. Most competing low-cost earphones are made with dynamic (moving coil) drivers that have undesirable frequency response peaks and weak highs. Etymotic created a design that makes dynamic drivers sound like high-end drivers by inserting a proprietary acoustic side-branch to redistribute energy, smooth the peaks and compensate for weak highs. The result is the Etymotic mc series, with best-in-class performance in its price range.

The mc2 delivers tight, accurate bass with crystal clear high-frequency detail at all listening levels. You'll experience 35 dB- 42 dB of noise isolation, which computes to 98%, the highest documented noise isolation of any earphones or headphones on the market today. The mc2 features a close-proximity microphone that works with many popular smartphones and tablets from Blackberry, Samsung, HTC, Motorola Mobility, HP, and of course, Apple.

ACCU Technology

I bought these to replace a pair of Etymotic earphones I've worn out over around 7 years. As I expected, the sound is superb. The isolation is great, and bass levels are fine if you listen to anything other that gut punching rock or rap or whatever. I find the flanges comfortable for use over many hours. These are less expensive that my old ones, but they are in the same place in the Etymotic product line. Their prices have just dropped across the board.

I specifically sprang for the model with the mic because I am now the proud owner of a Galaxy S3, which I increasingly use as a music playback device. Whether the button on the microphone does anything seems to be dependent on what music app you are using. I've gotten it to pause music a couple of times. So that implementation isn't ideal.

But these phones come with the Awareness! app touted as a great add-on. I liked the idea of using isolating headphones that would nevertheless let me hear if the house phone rang or if my wife said something to me. But I have been unable to get the app to work well at all. It uses the microphone in the headset, which is so close to the right earbud that it picks up the music that I'm playing (and I don't use exceptionally high sound levels). I've messed around with the adjustments, and I cannot get it right. Unless I am missing something, it is basically useless.

I'll update and raise the review if the app is improved, which it might well be.

Just what I was looking for: in-ear, good at blocking ambient noise, reasonable sound quality, and not *outrageously* expensive.

I've used a few different, inexpensive ear buds ($5-40). Even when the sound is passable, my experience is that they don't fit my ears, they're uncomfortable to wear, they fall out easily, they fall apart easily, and they just don't block noise well. I've tried some more expensive headphones that were nice but I was looking for something easily portable and inconspicuous to wear. These fit my bill really well.

I use the three-tier tips. The instructions will tell you that these are not designed for quick, one-handed insertion and extraction. This is fine for me. I actually can get them in and out with one hand but prefer the two-handed method. I appreciate that once inserted, they stay firmly in my ears. They are not hard to manage; they're just not ideal for yanking out of your ear on a moment's notice.

I have a somewhat discerning ear but I am by no means an audiophile. I listen to a wide variety of music: orchestral and chamber music, blues, hard rock, jazz. These perform admirably, especially when I'm out on the street, which is where I use them the vast majority of the time. They block a lot of environmental sound but let in just enough that I feel safe wearing them when I'm walking around near traffic (where I keep the volume relatively low). I'm intrigued by Etymotic's sound awareness app but haven't tried it yet. It wasn't a big factor in my decision.

I've been listening to .WAV files from my Android-powered Samsung Galaxy SII phone with these in-ear headphones. To cut to the chase, the sound is superb! My last pair was a very good pair of Sony's, but these from Etymotic are far superior. I listen to everything from AC/DC and Alan Parsons to Vivaldi and Zeppelin. I've heard base tracks that I didn't even know existed on some songs. Highs are crisp without being tinny. I'm listening to some Pearl Jam right now, and the background vocals are much clearer than other headphones, and even better than my very nice home system. These kinds of subtle elements can get muddied or lost altogether with lesser speakers, but they are right where the artist intended on these. (p.s. buy Pearl Jam - "Ten". You won't be disappointed!)

I use the 3-tiered tips and they stay in the ear very well. In fact, they don't want to come out without a twisting force. Sound isolation is nearly complete. Even when the music is off or between tracks, I really can't hear anything going on around me. I haven't tried the dome or foam tips. There is a bit of cord noise, but I haven't found any headphones that don't suffer the same problem. In short, cord noise really isn't much with these.

The software for Android is not available for my phone yet due to the Android version I'm running, so I can't comment on how well it works.

I highly recommend these headphones and wouldn't hesitate to get another pair if necessary.

I'm a frequent flyer and have used this headset on several flights. Even when not listening to a movie or music, the noise reduction is significant. I have used Bose over ear noise canceling headphones and Bose in-ear buds. Compared to those, I notice that I do not turn up the volume as much as with the Bose. I'm no scientist, but listening at a lower volume for an extended period has got to be better than listening at a higher volume. Sound quality is a very personal judgment and I believe these are fine. I'm a classical music fan and I believe the reproduction is true and the separation is good. These are used primarily in travel; consequently, they don't receive the most gently treatment. I have found their durability to be fine. In short, I would buy these again.
