A few days ago this set was selling on Amazon for about $93. I came back after I deposited my check and now it's $175. Waaay too expensive. The cheapest I found these DVD's are at Wal-Mart. Yes, you have to purchase them individually but you can also receive free site to store or free ship to home (if qualified). Below are the prices of the DVD's online, just to save you time because I know some people won't look or they forget.
Season 1 or: $14.96 (in bundle)
Season 1 HD: $26.96
Season 2 or: $14.96
Season 2 HD: $28.96 (in bundle)
Season 3: $14.96 (in bundle)
Season 3.5: $14.96 (in bundle)
Season 4: $14.96 (in bundle)
Season 4.5: $14.98 (in bundle)
Season 5: $24.32 (in bundle)
The next cheapest website I found them is at Target.
The first two seasons come in plastic dvd cases, BOTH of which were cracked. The other seasons come in cardboard cases. I don't know if they are packaged that way for the bundle or if they come that way any way you buy them, but the cardboard is ridiculous. Every corner was smashed, making it impossible to get the inside sleeve out without damaging it further. There are also no episode guides for seasons 3-5. A minor point, but annoying all the same.
Every single season had at least one scratched disc. The center prongs holding the discs are strange. I've never seen this type before - four little raised nubs that don't really work. At least half of the discs were loose, which is why there were so many scratches. Season 2 in my bundle also had several dirty discs that were covered in fingerprints, so I'm not even sure that these were new dvds.
I actually ordered two bundles, so I was able to compare them side by side. I was really shocked when I realized one of the bundles looked MUCH older than the other. The covers in the second bundle were noticeably faded. I'm guessing they've been sitting in a warehouse somewhere for years. Sure, Eureka's a few years old - but the second bundle obviously wasn't stored well and suffered sun damage.
I gave it two stars because at least I had all the right discs (other reviews mentioned missing discs). I hate to leave a bad review, because obviously Eureka is one of the finest shows ever produced, but I don't know how else to warn people about the terrible packaging quality. If you're a collector and the conditions of the boxes matter to you then pass on this bundle. Fortunately I put all my dvds in cd binders and don't care about the boxes, so as long as all of them play I will keep them. If I had paid full price for these I would be furious. But - I've rationalized that I got them cheap, so I got what I paid for.
sadly I have to take one star away as the dvd cases from season 1 and 2 are completely broken. and the cardboard sleeve from season 3.5 looks as if it was a second hand product. there was no paper or bubble wrap in the box the series was delivered in to protect the dvd's in transport.
I would recommend this to anyone, but be prepared to buy new dvd cases for the first two seasons.
