While the local Babys R Us carries everything a new mother could ever dream of, the one thing you won't find is this remarkable little European baby bath. A friend in the UK told me I simply HAD to order one for my grandbaby - and she was right. Unlike the large, long plastic baby baths that are offered here in the states, the Spa Baby (also called Tummy Tub) provides an amazingly unique bathing sensation for even the tiniest of babies. Because of it's shape, the bathwater stays warmer and the baby is automatically placed in a fetal position. The combination of both is a sure-fire way to calm a fussy baby!

My new favorite baby shower gift to give is one of these unique tubs, along with a basketful of baby bath items (shampoo, soap, lotion), washcloths, as well as a little hooded bath towel and matching robe. Always a hit!!!!

I actually imported one from Germany after seeing my sister use it with her son - he seemed so relaxed and happy in it, and washing the child wasn't as awkward as in regular tubs because you have access to both back and front. I'm expecting my first baby in March and can't wait to try it out!
One thing though - the markup is incredible! In Europe, they are sold for about 20 Euros.

My son who hated baths loves his spa baby! Now we both actually look forward to baths instead of dreading them. Here's a little tip if you have a small bathroom like me. Try putting the Spa Baby in the kitchen sink. That way you don't have to lean over, you can keep all the washing stuff right next to you and it's easy to dump out the water when you're done. If your baby hates her lie down bath then you have to try the Spa Baby experience. The difference is really pretty amazing.

I'm a family doc who has watched kids in these things. They love it! If they are fussy, they calm down pretty quick and love to bounce when they are newborns. The water should be about 100F for comfort, but the shape helps keep the water warm. We try to have one for all our mothers at the hospital.

Really wonderful for new borns, makes the bathing process easy, and also makes the process enjoyable for the baby! Our son enjoys his own little "spa" when bath day arrives.

My baby was big (8lb 10 oz at birth) so maybe that is why it didn't work well for me. As a newborn I didn't feel comfortable using the spa baby at all because I had to use both hands to hold baby's head above water leaving no hands to wash him with. As he got a little older and gained a little head control he could no longer fit down into it properly as it tapers narrower at the bottom. (I'm talking only like 3 months older). His feet and bum would actually slide up the front of the tub and his head would slide down the back and into the water. Also, it really made washing legs, feet and bum Very difficult as they were packed in there tight. I think my husband summed it up when he said "I can't believe you payed that for a five gallon bucket" Live and learn, newest trends aren't always the best ;>)

If you are sucked into purchasing a baby spa, then this is perfect. But basically, it is a bucket for your baby. Your local hardware store has one much cheaper. I purchased for my sister, and after she used it, she said basically the same thing. Ahh... the joy of being a first time parent!

This tub is basically a bucket. It's narrower at the bottom, with the idea that the baby will curl his legs up in the bottom of the tub and then have nowhere to go --- so his head won't go underwater. That's OK in theory but we didn't try this until our twins were 6 months and too big for their Boon tub. We waited that long so that they were at least somewhat able to sit up by themselves... with this tub there is no way we could get an arm in there to support a non-sitting baby from folding forward. Long story short, the twins hated this tub --- one just sat in it with her legs all folded up and screamed till we took her out (immediately)... the other one locked his legs and wouldn't sit down in it so we bathed him standing up the one time we used it. This tub was a major fail for us and we only used it once. Goodwill wouldn't take it because they don't take baby tubs (liability issue), so I disabled it by breaking a hole in the bottom with a hoe --- the only thing I had available in my shed that would do the job --- and put it in our recycling. End of the Spa Baby tub for us. I don't recommend this one.
