Pastor Benton begins by stating that 'True Gospel Preaching' has these two vital components-1.The facts about the person and atoning work of Jesus Christ.2.That these facts about the person and work of Christ are-"...the basis to persuade men and women to come to the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation." Mr.Benton readily acknowledges that 'The Five Points Of Calvinism' are merely a summary of 'God's Plan Of Salvation',and they just scratch the surface of the depth of God's power and wisdom in His glorious work of redemption.
Benton then gives a description of what 'Total Depravity' is,the first of the 'Five Points'-"we live to glorify self, but the self we gratify is in subjection to sin." After his brief consideration of 'Total Depravity',he then asks the question, that many after reading his summary of this teaching might ask-"How then can the doctrine of 'Total Depravity' be good news?" The author then gives three very sound(from a Biblical standpoint)reasons why this is good news-1.This truth faces reality-While its true that man is not as bad as he can be,but-"we are all in rebellion against God and his laws." It reveals our true state before a Holy and Righteous God.2.It provides a background for God's grace-The Gospel proclaims that God loves sinners, yes, there is hope for even the most depraved sinner.3.We can be honest before God about what we are. There's no reason to be insincere, guarded,or dishonest before the all seeing, all knowing Lord.-"A God who loves real sinners."
John Benton has provided a strong Biblical apologetic for 'The Doctrines Of Grace' as they relate to evangelism.I've never believed they were a hindrance to Biblical evangelism, but rightly understood are the basis for 'God Centered Evangelism',this booklet supports that conviction.
