as far as the rubber it's self it is a dramatic improvement over before when it was normal gum rubber. This pad used to be a brand called "real feel" and was the most durable pad you could buy. then D'addario bought that company and replace the amazing wood the rubber sits on with this compressed cardboard wood fiber material and it cant even get shipped to you with being destroyed. not to mention one drop of water and it ruined. I literally plan on removing the rubber from both sides and putting it on a real piece of wood because you can't even barely carry this thing around without it just breaking apart. The original real feel pad i bought when they hit the market when i was in middle school got thrown around, dropped, 7 years of marching band, then DCI Drum corps, and 100's of gigs. i got about 15 years out of that pad before it was stolen. It's a shame that D'addario "evans" has the most amazing products on every instrument and they just ruined this great product

I am loving the Evans 2-sided Practice Pad. I needed a good pad because I like to practice my drumming technique early in the morning and that doesn’t exactly work out for others in the house. I’ve had it almost a week now and I use this thing daily. It’s a beautiful pad all the way around: nice sanded wood with rounded edges, good thickness and weight, beautiful quality gum and recycled rubber on either side. When I opened it my first impression was that it was a little on the heavy side but that turned out to be a blessing because it will stay put, using either side, on any surface. The thickness also allows you to put in on any surface you want (carpet, padded seat, lap) and you still get the same rebound on your drum sticks as you expect without the pad being effected by sinking or giving. I usually set it on my foam piano bench. It truly is a real feel, as Evans calls it. The Gum Rubber response to the drum sticks is right in between what you would expect from your toms and snare; the Recycled Rubber side has a snappier response. Both sides of the practice pad are fun to beat on and even though the Recycled Rubber side is much harder it doesn’t create as much sound as you would think from looking at it, so you can use either side and never disturb anyone. I’ve beat on this thing a lot in the past week – sometimes abused it in frustration at myself – and, as for now at least, it refuses to show any stick marks on either side.

It's been 2 days since I recieved the RealFeel practice pad. In these 2 days I DID NOT play my Roland VDrums kit. I have been playing them every single days since I bought them. The RealFeel is so nice I can hardly stop playing it. I work from home (visualizations) and when my computers do their thing it leaves me quite some time to play drums.

The ReallFeel is quite quiet and feels great. The sound is soft and is much quieter then the rubber pads on my TD11K. It has a very nice rebound and as the name suggests - it has great feel to it. I don't have an accoustic drum set (never played one either) so I cannot atest to the "Real" in the name.
Highly recommended. It is quite heavy and sturdy. LOVE LOVE LOVE!!
I bought it since I saw many recommendations and yes it is truely worthy.

Realfeel - but not Realwood

First of all, I read lots of reviews about how great this pad was. Though, I should have focused more on the reviews comparing this version of the Realfeel pad to those made several years ago.

The Realfeel part of the pad is great. It makes for a good practice surface, I can see that. Where it lacks in in the Realwood department. The main portion of this pad is made from a compressed fiberboard material. For the price, this thing should be made from a real piece of wood.

The fiberboard may not have any issues at first (unless it was damaged in shipping - more about that later), but if you drop this pad on a hard floor, it's probably going to get dented. The fiberboard has very little strength to handle a fall - from what I can see...

My pad arrived damaged. I'm not sure what genius thought it would be a good idea tossing this thing in a plastic bag for shipping. I'm sure someone's trying to save some shipping costs somewhere... but that decision just ruined a $30 practice pad. This thing probably weighs at least three pounds. Given the construction, it really needs to be boxed up to prevent it from getting damaged.

I don't know if it got damaged in the truck, or if the delivery guy tossed it on my front porch... but the edge of the fiberboard pad met something it didn't like and the fibers are splintered and it has caused the pad to have an unlevel surface.

I'm sending it back because it was damaged. I suggest not purchasing one, because you're eventually going to drop this thing, and it's going to get ruined.

Less than ten minutes out of the box this pad had become one of the best drum related purchases I have ever made.
Over the years I have had or tried several different types of practice pads. I was recently looking for a new practice pad and ran across this one here on Amazon. I was intrigued by the "two sides-two feels" claim, and after reading some of the reviews decided to give it a try. It arrived quickly and was well packaged. I immediately pulled out my Tama Roadpro snare stand and gave it a try. I was in love from the very first paradiddle. This pad is very well made, looks great and seems as though it will hold up well over time. It is sturdy and weighs just enough to be stable sitting on the table instead of my stand.
The two sides: The grey or gum rubber side has a slightly textured surface, is very quite and offers excellent rebound. The black side has a firmer feel to it. It is definitely louder than the grey side and offers less in the way of rebound. I like this side when practicing rudiments as the lack of rebound really makes you work at it.
I would recommend this practice pad to any drummer. I would highly recommend this pad to anyone looking for a quiet way to practice and beginning drummers.

Premetto che non sono un batterista. il pad in oggetto l'ho acquistato per mio figlio apprendista batterista da circa due mesi. Mi avvalgo delle mie impressioni sulla qualità del prodotto e soprattutto sull'esperienza di utilizzo di mio figlio. Ho confrontato l'Evans ARF7GM APPRENTICE con altri due pad allenatori ,il Remo 10" e l' Evans real feel 12". Per qualità delle finiture il Remo con la sua forma rotonda e sonorità sembra essere più accattivante ma l'Evans APPRENTICE ,a detta di mio figlio ,sembra avere un rimbalzo più naturale e vicino al rullante della batteria. L' Evans Real feel da 12" oltre che di dimensione maggiore,come un tom o rullante, presenta la gomma più spessa di circa un millimetro e mezzo. Tengo a precisare, la descrizione in questa pagina può confondere , i due pad Evans da 7" e 12" non sono della stessa linea . L' Evans real feel 12" e l' é Evans APPRENTICE 7", ripeto ,oltre che per le dimensioni si differenziano per lo spessore della gomma. Ai fini pratici mio figlio ,per il momento ,non ha trovato sostanziali differenze nell' utilizzo . Il real feel 12", forse, ha un rimbalzo un pelino più naturale e simile a quello del rullante. L'APPRENTICE 7" ha il vantaggio di avere dimensioni compatte per un trasporto e l'utilizzo fuori casa . Consiglio vivamente per l'ottimo rapporto qualità prezzo l'acquisto dell'Evans APPRENTICE da 7" al neofita e soprattutto per chi si avvicina allo studio della batteria con serietà ma senza investire troppo subito. L'acquisto dell'Evans real feel da 12" al costo di quasi il doppio rappresenta un ottimo investimento nel tempo. L'APPRENDICE 7" presenta sul dorso una filettatura da 8mm che permette di avvitarlo su uno supporto standard per cymbals, ai fini pratici non é rilevante nella scelta. E' un pad allenatore , risulta comodo poggiarlo su una superfice piana o sul supporto del rullante della batteria. Ho dato quattro stelle in quanto le finiture di fabbrica non sono eccezionali e le strisce di gomma antiscivolo non sono incollate bene ,anche se ,questo difetto non pregiudica la stabilità sul piano di appoggio.

GOOD practice pad. I was afraid the size was not big enough. It is actually perfect for practicing. The 2-sided solution works very well and it changes the feeling.
I definitely recommend it. If you are in doubt, go for it. It's a bit more expensive than others but I think it's worth it.

Thoroughly delighted with this pad! Although anything will struggle to beat Remo's 8" Ambassador head practice pad, the RealFeel is incredibly quiet and feels more real, the fuller the stroke. I was getting frustrated with the tuneable mesh head pads, that have a tiny window where they actually operate perfectly, and even then every strike of the pad brings a different pitch note. It feels in time but it sounded wrong. Plus they didn't stay in tune for long.

The RealFeel gives your wrists a much better workout than the overly bouncy mesh heads. The conditions in which the RealFeel doesn't shine, is in cold temperatures, so if you leave it in the shed overnight in winter, your morning session on the gum surface may not have the bounce you expect. Feels like the stick's getting buried in the head. Don't leave it in the shed overnight.
