Product Description

Color: Hardware Mounted

The Top of Stair Extra Tall gate helps parents keep their children safe from common household dangers, especially around the stairs. The four point hardware mount combined with swing control provides a secure top of stair mounting that is easy to install with minimum tools required. For your convenience, the gate will swing in one or both directions depending on how you set the swing control. A one handed release handle will allow you to pass through the gate quickly and easily, but the two motions to unlock the gate will be too difficult for baby. If your space is limited, don't worry, because this gate will also retract as you open it.

This is an additional review after having used these gates for well over a year. I still highly recommend them but read on for very important info. I have 3 of these gates and I noticed on all 3 that the plastic hardware used to lock the two gate pieces together will eventually loosen over time with repeated opening and closing of the handle. The plastic parts I am referring to can be seen in the photos and they are on the top and bottom of each gate. The main purpose of them is to "lock" the gates in the desired width for your hallway. The problem is that the plastic parts cannot withstand the screw torque necessary to hold the gates together firmly. This leads to the parts loosening and allows the gate to "slide" left or right when opening and closing the gate. This can be a dangerous problem because it could lead to a failure of the gate to lock and someone could "push" through it.

I tightened and retightened the screws in the plastic hardware however the hardware is not durable and the plastic pieces eventually cracked. These parts should be metal and not plastic. I do love the gates so I decided to fix this issue permanently. I went to the local home improvement store and bought some 1 3/4" screws and nylon lock nuts to prevent it from coming off. I drilled holes through the gates and bolted them together (see photos). This will lock the gates in place and prevent any unwanted "sliding" left or right. You can rest easy that the gates will never fail after doing this simple fix. I still highly recommend the gates but be aware that you should check and recheck the gates every so often for loosening of the plastic retaining pieces if you choose not to bolt these together.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
Very sturdy gates and they look great.

I have had this gate for 5 years and it's at the top of a flight of hardwood stairs - I run a daycare and I've had kids crash into it at full speed and it has never budged. I trust this gate probably more than any other gate I've had at the top of the stairs.

I can see what other reviewers are saying about the latch - when you press the blue buttons it doesn't feel like they are actually being depressed, but they are doing something, and that's what allows the latch to be opened easily. It's a little difficult to do at first, but I tell people who come to the door, "press the blue button even though it doesn't seem like it's doing anything" and then they can get it. You only have to press one side of the button also, and it still works. It's difficult, yes almost impossible for kids to do, and that's what makes this gate so great - I've never had any kid be able to figure it out, even the most accomplished escape artists. This is important, because the stairs my gate is guarding go right down to a front door that leads to a very busy street. Not to be overly dramatic, but my business and many children's lives have depended upon this gate and it has never let me down.

As for the reviewer that said they installed this gate correctly yet a 2 year old was able to "rattle" it open...? I'm sorry, I have to say I don't think the gate was actually installed very well. I've had 2 year old boys on up to 8 year old boys go barreling into this gate and hit it with their full body weight at full speed. Nothing. Nada. Nobody gets through this gate.

Once I knew I had the right adjustment, I did have to adjust the bottom tightening screw and tighten it down REALLY hard with a pair of pliers.

Obviously when choosing baby gate, safety and ease of use are 2 very big factors. This gate was fairly easy to install. It came with all the necessary hardware and detailed instructions. I would have rated 5 stars if it not for the hinge bracket assembly. I feel that it is not as safe as it could have been if made slightly different. To emphasize, the hinge bracket is mounted on the wall or banister. You then slide the door hinges into the brackets. I feel that there should be a way for the hinge to lock into the bracket. Unfortunately the hinges just sit loosely in their brackets. Maybe this isn't a big deal, but if someone's child were to lift up with enough force on the bracket side, there is a chance that one or both hinges could be unattached from the wall / banister. I ended up placing a screw directly above each of the hinges to ensure that our little one wouldn't be able to do just that. Other than that, it is tall, easy to use and pretty easy to install.

This gate works alright. It is a little hard to walk through because you have to unlatch the gate, then slide it over slightly, then swing it out of the way. This would be alright, but it is sometimes hard to slide the gate, depending on the width it is set at (it will sometimes get stuck while sliding over). Also, if you were thinking about staining this gate to match your decor (like I did), I thought I would let you know that the hardware is riveted on from the factory. This means you will have to try to stain around (and under) it. Overall, the gate is high quality, built solid, and looks nice installed. It isn't that bad to walk through once you get used to using it. I am just not sure if I would put it in any high traffic areas you will be walking though often.
