Format: Audio CD
TRP (The Reese Project) is a strange assortment of instruments that make s for a refreshingly different form of jazz/folksong/ blues/and even classical music. The group consists of Tom Reese, flute, pennywhistle , alto flute, Laurie Haines Reese, cello and electric cello, Kirk Reese, piano, and Dave Young, drums. They play together on some tracks and singly on others. Whatever they choose to play the sound is full of dash, class, style, and a sense of having a very good time.

There are eight tracks on this album - three are new songs by Tom Reese and the others are re-interpreted and arranged songs from famous composers such as the Hammerstein/Romberg `Softly as in a morning sunrise' and form folksongs like the spiffy cello 'ensemble' (add in Tish Haines Brown on violin and viola!) recorded version of Shenan-D'oh!a and the sprightly `Minstrel Boy'.

Every song takes on an original flavor and while most of the tunes are upbeat, there is enough variation to satisfy the most finicky musical taste. The feeling is that this TRP jams well and that while most of the tunes seem to have the arrangements by Tom and LH Reese, this sampler is a group effort - full of energy and enthusiasm and tasty playing. Grady Harp, September 11

The Reese Project: EVENING IN VERMONT: I gave high marks to these folks in issue # 104, & not without merit. As you listen to the second track, "Blues For Ruthie", you'll recognize (instantly) why I think they're great jazz players... Tom Reese's flute on this one is among the best I've heard in 2011! I didn't realize it, but this is their 9th CD, so they have a strong playing tradition going for them, to be sure. The lively "Kitchen Girl" demonstrates a diversity not often found in today's jazz world... superb energy, & pianist Kirk Reese just KICKS on this one! The highlight track for this ol' reviewer, though, was their rendition of Wayne Shorter's "Footprints"... one of the most calming versions I've ever heard of this classic jazz piece! I give TRP my MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an "EQ" (energy quotient) rating of 4.98. Get more information at [...]
